Anyone tagged out in 101 yet?
« on: November 19, 2011, 07:49:34 AM »
My buddy and I have been up here in 101 (Eastside of the unit) for 3 days now and have seen a decent number of whitetail, but nothing that we want to tag out on within shooting range. How's everyone else doing? Let's see pics and storys. Good luck to everyone that's up here!

We were up there from opening day through Monday and were discouraged to learn that the whitetail weren't behaving like the rut was even on. I now regret going so early; would like to be there about now...

We met up with a fellow stickshooter on Saturday evening and he showed us the head & cape of a mature 5x5 he arrowed from inside of twenty yards on opening morning. The man's stand was in a bedding area; two younger bucks had already bedded down at about 15 & 20 yards from his stand when the mature buck came along acting like he was going to bed down near them. That is not typical of rut behavior is it?

I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood. Been up here for two days. For what I can tell doesn't seem like full rut yet!

18' of snow at the place and very little deer movement.  Kind of unusual for this time of year but there is a  big cat that has moved into the area.  Gotta fix that problem.   ;)  Gonna have my buddy chase it over into the Sherman Creek area.   :chuckle:

I left my Broken down Skool bus this afternoon in Kelly Hill and while I was loading up it sounded like some one hadn't read the rules and thought that rifle season was still open on the hill across the river in 101.

happens alot..the gamie sits on the bridge around barstow and south of there listening for gunshots! Not to include some dont know what a muley or whitey is during archery season. we had some guys staying next to us one year telling us how the rut was cranking and bucks were running everywhere! we hadnt seen one buck chasing anything, they tell us they tagged out on 2 and hit another...the also proceed to tell us exactly where they were. We went over and checked it out...hiked in and were seeing tons of mulies!! then found a blood trail followed it and there laying alive was a muley with a arrow in it..it took off :bash: we went back to see these other 2 bucks they killed and they had headed home :bash: idiots

This is also a problem in modern as well. Saw a hunting camp that had a mulie doe hanging from a meat pole and when we talked to the camp out of the camper rolled a youngman who was about 10. He had shot the deer his first and we had proud Grandpa and Dad  pouring a fresh Bloody Mary's about 10 A.M. The Warden was doing a drivearound so I wonder if their paths crossed.

I don't see 101 being open for late buck? You guys must have permits? Oops, I just noticed that archery was open. My bad! Good luck up there, I love that unit. I wish it was open for late rifle.

It ain't lookin' good here guys. I go out everyday looking for coyotes or cats. I've only seen 1 muley buck behind my house yesterday and he wasn't swollen at all. No whitetail bucks, none, zio, nada. But, here, we don't have hardly any snow, weird.

Yes. Which side of 101 are you on ? I'm not feeding them either. Just haven't seen the normal amounts.

I like what i'm hearing, sounds like the rut hasn't it the peek yet.  Hope it holds out till this weekend or beginning of next week.

I talked to a couple guys today about the rut and seeing whitetails. I saw pictures and I was lying from what I said I saw. They are feeding them and the deer I saw were BIG. Sorry for misleading you guys.

The snow festivals of 07/08 and the winter last year took it's toll on the deer.
With the presents of the woves running around what few deer that are left maybe just a statistic!!   :twocents:

Just got back from the 101.  I can tell you the rut is in full effect!!  Saw 10 different bucks chasing does the past couple weekends.  Due to the amount of snow, had to stop hunting early and knock off a smaller buck than I wanted to take.  Oh well, meat in the freezer...pic to follow

I usually hunt the eastside of Sherman during the first week it's open for bow.  Every single year I run into at least one rifle hunter.

Here is the one I had to take due to fact that it would be my last weekend to hunt this year.  Not the biggest deer in the woods but quite a hunt!  Thankful I found him with the not so good shot placement.  Had to let him go over night and tracked him the next morning.
