Savage Axis
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:39:32 PM »
Hey everyone! So I have a feeling I'm a sucker for savage rifles having sold my 10/22 for a Mark 2 .22 and now I'm thinking about selling my Rem. 700 VTR .223 for a Savage Axis or a Stevens 200 in .223. Only problem, I don't know which is better. Axis or Stevens. Longest shots will be 300 yds. Most within 150. Any advice with what to go with? I'm liking the clip and price of the Axis but I like the option of getting upgrades for the Stevens. Though I only do that if I damage a rifle. Please only give advice if you've at least held or shot either of these rifles. Thanks ya'll!

I would get the Stevens myself, I like the look and feel of the Axis rifles but the magazines kind of suck.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I have the Axis .223 and it's a tack driver with some handloads a buddy did. I dumped the crappy scope it came with and put on a Redfield, did a $2 trigger job cause it's way to stiff off the shelf. I know nothing about the Stevens but the Axis for the price was worth the gamble for the price and it paid off. I was looking for a decent coyote gun to just throw in the truck while out doing other things but ended up with a gun I'll use on an actual coyote hunt. The only thing I cant change is the bolt throw, it's long for such a small cartridge. The detachable mag works fine in mine and it hold 5+1. My  :twocents:

I have a stevens 200 in .223. the stock isn't very stiff and the mag keeps stacking the rounds wrong so sometimes I can only get 3 or 4 in at a time. Other than that I like it. Seems like any rifle out of the box these days needs a new trigger so I'm not going to complain about my heavy trigger. I apparently can't shoot scopes very well so I won't talk about accurracy. With me it's 2 moa at 100 meters. With my wife its 1 moa. I'm sure it does better on a bench rest but I can't hunt from one of those.
