shipping a full size cougar mount
« on: November 21, 2011, 12:59:52 PM »
I was wondering if anybody has any experience or knows the best way to go about shipping a cougar mount. I have a cat that just got done but don't have any room in my house for it. I was hoping that I could ship it down to Texas for my dad's new house but don't know the logistics of it. It is not the weight that I am really worried about but the size of the box it would have to go in. I am also hoping it doesn't cost an arm and a leg because the mount itself was expensive but hopefully well worth it.

That’s a good question.  :dunno:  I have a bear coming my way in a few months and I am very interested in how much that would cost?

Well....You are going to have to build a wooden crate...Something the size of a cougar is probably going to have to be shipped by truck.
I would contact a taxidermist...maybe even 2 or 3 that has experience with shipping mounts and see what they have to say. It's not cheap...lifesize is much different than a rug or shoulder mount.
Call a freight company and give estimated dimensions and weight and get a ballpark figure.

The taxi that did it has never shipped one so he wasn't sure how much it would cost. I was hoping one on here might have done it and could give me some ideas. I could always buy some materials and build a crate too. Didn't think about that.

Vandeman17:
Ive shipped Elk and Deer mounts to NY and NC from my shop in Eastern Wa ( Dayton ). I would suggest building your own crate and contacting a freight company. I have used freightquote.com  in the past and they were suprisingly reasonable but remember it all depends on the size of the crate.

Good Luck

Last elk mount I shipped in a home made crate was 450 . All depends on fuel prices on how they quote shipping. Use a reputable shipper, I have seen what happens to mounts when the forklift drivers done pay attention. Make sure to have plebty of innsurance to cover damages just in case. Or make sure the trucking company covers any damages.

It would be nice to drive it down there but it would probably cost me more in gas since I would have to drive both ways. If I could somehow work in a hunt on the way then maybe....  :chuckle:

This is who I used but the closest terminal was in Portland at the time 3 years ago. Might want to give them a call and if you need a Taxidermist to OK the shipment or something I can call and help get it squared away.
