Yelm Hunter, I don't like snaggers and poachers any moe than you do, unfortunatly we don't know if this guy was knowingly breaking the law or just stupid.

Does it matter?  If you dont know the laws then dont fish.  That's like defending some guy for shooting a 2x1 elk in a true spike only :bash:

Sorry Yelm Hunter, points are only for big game violations. Can't get any for fishing violations. If you are serious about your post you really need to get some help.

Don't worry I don't need to get any help.... I'm sick and tired of POACHERS AND SNAGGERS!! How about them Indians that through them big Triple Hooks over and snag your fish from you that you have been fighting for 15 mins thats 40lbs?? If you were in my shoes and fish as much as I do and own your own boats and guide service you would understand. Oh and don't worry I have plenty of clients that will say the say thing...

Some of the shadiest things I've seen hunting and fishing is when I've hired a guide. They're usually more concerned about making the client happy than following the rules.  :twocents: Not saying you're one of them...just saying

Remember he also stated that this wasnt his fish! it was his buddys. Pretty sure after the but whoopin hes taking reading this thread he wont pull another native steelhead out of the water. Educating people about how to handle fish is how things change, not going after them and "trying to get points." This seems like a situation where some possitive critical feedback could be usefull instead of barating a guy till he no longer wants to post photos or stories on this site for us to read. Cascade_Fisher: take the lesson learned here and pass it on anytime you see it on the river, wish I could have seen the picture!

wish I could have seen the picture!

If you've seen one pic of a wild steelhead out of the water with a couple fingers stuck in it's gills, you've seen them all.

Please send me the picture I would love to see it.  Now that law was put in place last year from what I understand.  I understand how to treat a fish so that it lives.  But I still wonder if they went too far with this.  If you took it out for say 5 seconds then put it back in the water then release it would it still survive?
But I still think the law does not work.  I was over at the Grande Ronde I found two dead steelhead in the water.  Now that place is 99% fly fisherman.  They take care of the fish way better then gear fishermen because only gear fishermen post pictures of fish out of the water.  So based on that, I think fly fisherman should be banned from using longer than 11 foot rods because they ware out the fish and they die with the longer rods.

the problem is there was no water dripping from the fish so just a quick pic is not what happened. the other problem is that the guy had his fingers in the gills and was holding it over the rocks at about upper stomach sternum height while he was standing on his feet. now, have you ever felt how strong a steelhead can be when it gets to squirming around? all it takes is half a second and that fish is falling onto sharp rocks from about 4 1/2' - 5' up. that would be like dropping you from 15' onto rocks after you just fought for your life and had no oxygen to breathe. to be honest there were things in the picture that would lead me to believe that fish was not released but im not gonna go there.

not quite sure how to take this but if your serious, everything about this is WAY off base.

WOW!! how about you guys just crucify him, holy cow!! Ill go get the lynchin rope you guys get his address......... cut the guy some slack, im sure he has learned his lesson. and about the holding the fish above the rocks with fingers in gils, if you want to play the what if game........ what if while you were holding the fish under water by its tale taking a safe appropriate picture a bald eagle came by and snagged it from your grasp. I could come up with crap like this all day!! and about the  comment of im not sure if the fish made it back in the water, i could just as easily sit here and say "im not sure that deer was shot in the daylight, or im not sure that elk wasnt on private property." Sorry to keep this thread alive but how about we quit beating this dead horse. get over it, whats done is done, I hope someone learned something and lets all move on

none of those were good analogies  some of us happen to care a great deal for these wild summer runs ( and winters for that matter)

I was kind of going for rediculous there bud. all im getting at is that maybe you should cut the guys some slack and not go around checking pictures for water droplets coming off of fish.

by the way that fish in your picture probably didnt make it cause it looks like you had his head out of the water for an extended period of time during that photo shoot.
