I have had only one bad run in with fly fishermen,,I was 15, my cuz and I headed out to minidka {small town in Idaho}close to where we lived [Rupert}From there We headed out across the desert to fish the little wood river, killer brown fishing we heard..So we head across the desert so we could call dogs on the long ass dirty bumpy ass rd there.About 150 miles{really about 30} but ruff going..So we get to the river, grab the worms, hook up and start fishing,in no time at all we each had a few nice browns. Then out of nowhere there is a guy and he is fly fishing towards us on the otherside of the river..He yells at us that this is fly fishing only..My cuz and I look at each other, put on another worm and cast out..Fish on!!!The guy starts screaming he is going to call the game warden..Well I said, by the time you get to a phone and he comes out here it will be about 5 hrs.My cuz catches a fish as Im discussing the logistics of a game warden making it out here with his holyness the fly guy...We gathererd up our limit of browns and headed back to town..They should have signs on both sides of the river,LOL    Probably what bothered me the most was this guy was real pretty, neat, no dust at all on him,He was only a few yrds from the paved rd on his side of the river fishing..Yet we treked across the high desert, bumpy dirty, dusty for miles to soak a worm. And Im sure what bothered him the most was those free night crawlers we dug up were nailing the fish and what ever he was tossing was not getting the job done.....off topic but this thread brought back some good memories..

I don't konw why i'm even bothering adding my two cents to this, but I feel compelled.  For everyone out there that is fly-ignorant, a 10' 8 weight fly rod is about the same strength as a 10' med - med/hvy spinning or bait casting rod. Now being one of those lowly GUIDES that everyone is talking about, I can add input from both sides. I have guided both gear and fly anglers and to this day still fish with either technique depending on the day, location, and species pursued (of course its easier to fling a float rig with a spinning rod when you drank too much pinot the night before  ).

I will admit that many guys with a fly rod in their hand to tend to fight fish for to long, but I think it has more to do with the number of fish that they have actually caught on that rod and their knowledge of how much pressure they actually can put on the fish. I've caught well over 1000 steelhead and about 1/4 of those have been on fly rods. I can land a 12# wild buck just as fast with a fly rod as I can with a bait casting rod and definitely faster than I can with a spinning rod, but that is because I have caught many, and know the limitations of my rod, leader, knots and hooks. You have to admit that most anglers we see on the river (both gear and fly anglers) probably play their fish too long because most of them have caught very few of these fish and its almost a day ending experience when one gets away.

In the future, rather than crucifying someone on the river for playing their fish too long, put YOUR rod down and go help them out. They may be a novice and need some pointers. You want people to know how to handle fish correctly and not play them to long? Then teach them! That was and is my favorite part about being guide is seeing that AHA! moment when someone figures it out. . . oh and tying up the launch on a river 500 miles from my house while I tie a custom nymphing leader onto my 11' Sage switch rod, while smoking a cigar and airing out my second bottle of cabernet.  Thanks guys!

I think the action of the rod is what makes people perceive that fly anglers play the fish too long.  Most spinning outfits are going to be fast or x-fast while fly setups are more moderate to slow.  Casts an illusion of a weak low power rod.

There in lies the problem with fly fishing,
you loose inches before you even start fishing ............. off your pole that is.  :stirthepot:

That won't add much flame.... you need to strike to the heart of it.   All of the 509 er flyfishers are ok, its all the westside ones that are tree humpin cigar smoking dweebs.   :chuckle:   Anyone that drives a subaru or a Beemer to the fishing spot.......

Dsiclaimer....... Not making light of the matter.  Please leave all wild fish in the water.   all cigars were extinguished in a proper manner before photo was taken.  All orange vests were removed prior to photos and no trees were harmed after said humpings, all worms photo'd in cans or backs of pick up trucks were props...Irepeat no worms were harmed in this huntwa photoshoot.Know the rules
