Wool or under armour cold gear?
« on: November 23, 2011, 10:06:59 AM »
I am trying to decide between some under armour cold gear bibs or wool pants for late season elk eastside, I found really good deals on both the UA bibs are 80 and the wool pants are 50. I have good boots and upper body gear, I just dont have any late season pants. I am kinda leaning towards wool just because it is a proven material, but the UA gear is pretty sweet. Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated

I personally wear wool pants with under armour under them.  For some reason i cant get away from wool even with all the great other gear out (UA, sitka, kryptek).  This may just because i am to cheap for the name brand stuff.   :twocents:

Good wool isn't necessarily cheap so I doubt thats it.  I am betting you just know a material that can save your life in the worst of the worst.

I have both. If I had to choose on, it would be the wool. I like the under armour  when I am sitting, but sweat like crazy when hiking in it. Can't beat GOOD wool. I've had some of the cheaper stuff and it's not worth buying.

Wool all the way.. with polypro underneath.

any suggestions on "GOOD" wool? What about base layer? I am considering getting some wool blend long johns, never tried polypropaline

I upgraded from Patagonia base layer to Merlino this year..... Unbelievable product!  Moisture wicking is better than anything I have tried...  Costco was selling Merlino as of a few weeks ago.

Wool all way for me. In my opinion, UA is only good for fishing or stand/blind hunting.

This year I went with UnderArmor like shirt from Russel with a wool shirt over that. When I got warm, I shed the wool and felt fine with the under shirt.

Like everyone else, I too like wool.  I was cheching out the Under Armour outer wear earlier this year but ended up buying a pair of pants by Gamehide (Hyperhide H2O).  I really like them and they were a bit cheaper than the Under Armour.  As for base layers/ longjohns......Under Armour all the way, it is worth the extra coin.

I can't find anything better than wool.  Merino wool for base keeps you warm, is quiet, and doesn't stink after two days of use.   Mid layer of wool is the same.  The only reason to have something else for exterior is to keep you dry.

Another voter for merino wool base layers. You can sweat in them all you want and they don't stick to you, yet they still keep you warm. For weight purposes, I'd go with a wool base layer and a synthetic outer layer like the UA

Down to about 20 iwear whipcord wool, then if snowing and blowing i will either go to heavy weight filsons or lighteight goretex, also heavyweight underwear wil sometimes be substitute for heavy pants. An hour before i leave i get the NOAA weather report so i have some idea of weather.

Wool. UA is overrated. The material is way cheaper without their logo on it. Just picked up a sweet gortex shell and pants for a great price a cabelas (side note) and I gotta say I'm disappointed in the military. Stuff I just bought is silent, way warmer, and not stiff like that army version. Looks like it'll hold up better as well.

That is almost all I wear while hunting. NO COTTON! A good synthetic pair of underwear, and long underwear, with wool pants( I like the Cabela's washable wool pants) and a micro fleece shirt, fleece vest, and wool coat. Layers are important, especially if you are on the move. I wore that exact thing this year on my elk hunt, 16 degrees, and I never put the coat on. Didn't get cold either.

I'm surprised that no one mentions SILK for a base layer.

I like wearing polypro long johns or pants under my wool pants. If it is wet out, I wear my cheapo GoreTex shell pants over the wool. Always comfortable and never to hot or cold. Sitting in a stand or hiking. One of my favorite pair of wool pants were from Sportsman Guide. I bought them about 13 years ago for $25. They are swiss military stamped 1927 on the inside....

I've got some Woolrich Malone Wool pants size 48. Waaaaaaaaaaaay too big for me now. They are brand new, maybe 10 years old, never been worn or altered. Been in the drawer. You pay postage on them and you can have them.

Under Armour everything for me.  Baselayers are awesome and their outerwear is just as good.  But can't say I've tried too much wool to compare.  Plus I have a connection to 50% off UA products so makes it nice  :IBCOOL:

I have both Under Armour Cold Gear 2.0 and First Lite Merino wool.  The First Lite is hands down a better product.  It is way more comfortable, and the Under Armour has shunk over the last two years of washing.  It also has pilled up on the outside.  I will not buy another set of Under Armour base layers.  I also have a set of wool blend base layers that a friend gave me and they are decent also.
