After seeing smdave's post with his kimber 338 federal I think thats dam near the best westside bear/elk gun.
Hell I REALLY want one for out here in MT. Light, minimal recoil, plenty of KO power out to 300 yards and in a short action. If only I could trust there accuracy a bit better id already have one

I'm shocked nobody has said .50bmg minimum  :yike: Maybe even a 9 in naval gun.

Thats why I said my book :chuckle: I would shoot a bear with a 243 but if I am picking one for just bear I am going 284 or bigger. I would have no prob shooting one with a 25-06 or 270 etc. If I am picking one just for bears! its going to be 284+. Mine have all been shot with a 300 win mag.

Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering why the .308 isn't more popular. Seems the size above and below is way more popular.

There's 35. I had no idea there were so many irregular cartridge devotees out there! I have to admit to learning a few new cartridges from doing this poll.

Caliber don't do anything compared to placement and bullet.

Put it on the money, and dead is not more deader.

Bears walk from poorly placed 338Win too......besides, most of the average WA bears aint that big anyways. Factory loaded  223 would dump most of the bears that get shot in this state.

:yeah:

The best caliber for Washington Black Bear is the one you can shoot the best! Shooting a large magnum just because some "expert" said it was the best and a animal is lost because of poor shot placement makes absolutely zero sense..... :twocents:

Maybe... But I think a .50 bmg round would not be a good round for it. There's just as much too big as too small. I know what CAN take them, that's why I said ideal. It's purely to see what people have to say about they're cartridge of choice. I'll probably end up using a 30-30 or a .308
