Now whats up with this stuff, I havent read anything in the hunting regs saying you cant run them now does any one have solid information saying you cant? I know you cant hunt them just wondering about running them for pics...

If by run you mean chase with dogs, than I've heard if you have your dogs on a leash at any time than it can't be taken as using dogs for hunting. Also, if you don't have a gun than your in the clear too. Just be sure to carry something for if that cat gets ticked at you. Like a big knife. Or spear. Or vicious dogs.

I believe it depends who you talk too.....the fact they had pursuit only and then regular hunt seasons I would think that there probably are some rules out there right now, or there would be alot more hound hunters and less griping.....

Then you haven't looked very close. It's spelled out very clearly in the regs.

Hound hunting:
• The use of dogs to hunt black bear, bobcat, coyote, and cougar (except as noted below) is prohibited year round.

Yeah to hunt. I dont know anyone that doesnt hunt with a gun. So its still kinda unclear.

It's ILLEGAL to pursue lions and bobcats with dogs in this state. Now if you want to keep your dog on a leash and not have a weapon, then you would be perfectly legal, but have a weapon or unsnap the lead and you are in violation.

Alright thanks. I just never seen anything saying you cant run them. everything I read said you couldnt hunt them, and if you dont have a weapon on you then it aint hunting. And I have talked to game wardens and all they had to say is you cant kill them and they had no idea of just plain ole' running them. Again thanks...

Washington for Wildlife, as well as many other sportsmen and women, including hound owners, sent their letters and recommendations to WDFW this fall when they were taking them for the up oming season setting sessikn. Unfortunately, they only review seasons and rules every 3 years, so if they dont change it for next year, without special circumstances or a large petition, it will be 2016, before we have another shot at it

ok so how do we go about getn them to atleast seriously consider it on the next season change, give me an email or a mailing address, i will send emails and letters matter a fact i would love to, i cant believe the game department isnt doing what they can to help us out in this matter, they are passing up alot of damn money thats for sure, help me out here i will be happy to stand at stores and post offices and where ever necessary to get signatures..... lets go people lets get are damn rights back, if you have never heard a hound bring a cat around a mountain on clear stary night with a foot of snow on the ground then you are seriously missing out, or sneakn up to your traps and hearing the rustle of your trap chain and heart starts pumpn, the home show is comin up soon and so is the sportsman show i could get us a crap load of signatures..... come on help me out now get me the paper work and i will do the rest.........

It's never going to happen....pretty pessimistic?? Yep we couldn't get the majority of sportsman to lift a finger last time and even then we had a bunch who were against it. In this state, you will never get a ballot initiative to pass, I'd be shocked if you could even get enough signatures to get it on the ballot, but even if we did, it would never pass in this state, it just wouldn't.

well help get the signature papers and i will get the signatures, me and trophy hunt have even changed the minds of some serious tree huggers here at work, and with the threat of wolves and the thought of deer being eatn up by cougars or the thought of a baby calf elk then we can change minds, we just gotta do it and now is the time, tell me who to contact to get these signature papers and i will get what we need, in the mean time we need someone that uis better at writing to the soft side of people and explain to them what cats do to deer and elk, someone scientific, i will make a million damn copies and disperse them all over the damn state, and if anyone knows someone at the WDFW we need them to get involved and help us, they are the ones that will really benefit by the money this will generate and with budget cuts they need this..... we gotta fight hand tooth and nail to get this back.... lazy ass people need not help just stay out of the way but make damn sure you vote in favor of this for the sake of OUR deer and elk population...

I would devote alot of time collecting signatures if we got something organized. I think we can get a bill on the ballot, we just need a few committed people. I really do not know how to go about getting started but i sure as hell want to be apart of getting our dogs back out in the woods. This will be my first year in awhile that i won't get to run a cat, and ihate seeing my dog sit in her kennel only to be hunted a few times a year.

The last thing I ever want to do is stiffle something but look at it realistically. Ok, your able to get organized enough to get the signature process started, then you get enough volunteers to collect enough signatures (massive effort), you succeed and get it on the ballot. Then what? You are MILLIONS of dollars behind the game. Do you have a war chest? Just because you get it on the ballot you need to run commercials, adds in the papers and on the radio, etc... They already have MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars just sitting there waiting to crush any initiative you could come up with. Think they'll tell the truth this time? Nope, they will just run a few thousand commercials showing some SOB shooting a cub out to a bunch of hungry hounds....game over. Look I'll get involved and work my ass off, but realistically, it ain't happening in this state just because 200 houndsmen want to run their dogs.

i would still try, i do thinks its possible to get a hound bill on the ballot. and i aslo believe our wdfw could potentially support it, i dont see us having commercials on tv but i could definetly see some radio coverage. im sure some radio stations would do a segment on it.

i cant lead something like this but will throw my support to the fullest. id like to see wfw try to set something up as they are some what organized but i dont think hounds are on their agenda. if i could just move i would but unfortunetly im stuck in this state and hound hunting in idaho just isnt realistic for me because of where i live. i would want to atleast try for some pursuit only seasons, thats all i really want is to tree not kill some critters

i am all in even if it was pursuit only, course i would rather be able to shoot a cougar in a tree instead of walkn away or we could atleast get it to hound permit only but damn we need hound huntn back, these damn cats are tearing are deer population apart, and i aint ashame to say that i aint good enough to call them in, i will donate every evening and every weekend until we get enough signatures, and even just handing out letters with no b.s info on it about why we need this back and why it benefits alot more people than just hound hunters, then i think in this economy it might just be possible

One of the angles that MAY work is a ballot imitative that you can get ALL sportsmen behind, but not directly related to hounding or trapping even and that is an initiative that removes wildlife management out of the initiative process and back into sound Wildlife Management. Ballot initiatives have no place in wildlife management, the professionals need to be the ones who manage the resource for the good of the resource and for the good of the state. Maybe we could get a initiative crafted that returns sound wildlife management and ALL management tools back to the WDFW......of course that presents problems as well since you still have the WDFW managing wildlife politically and not scientifically.

Jackmaster, I like your enthusiasm and I would be willing to assist at some level. I am a former employee of the WDFW right out of college for about 4 years, ended up in Olympia...I'm an eastern washington native and didn't like my job over there and to make a long story short returned to school to get a teaching certificate. Been a teacher/baseball coach for about 15 years...teach Science. I am a former hound owner that hunted cougars, bobcats, raccoon etc. here in the Kittitas Valley (cougars galore). I wish this state for this reason alone was two states...East Wa. and West Wa. two different worlds with two different populations of people. I was apart of the contingency trying to save hound hunting way back when and remember all the tactics and emotions that came about when we lost our hound hunting. I'm looking at hounds right now in fact to try and get my 9 and 12 year old boy involved in coon hunting....love it! I'll be headed over to a hunt this Friday in fact just to meet up with people in Pomeroy Washington. I agree, management needs to be back in the hands of the WDFW and even if for the most part the hunting was pursuit only I would be completely happy. Of course, lottery type tags with seasons for those who own hounds would be great but if we could at least get the whole states population to see that at minimum a PURSUIT season is an effective way to manage Cougar/Bear encounters as a deterrent and an education of the problem animals.

i agree bornforhorns, even if the wdfw would let us have a pursuit season back it would be a great tool for them to get more accurate numbers on the cat population, would something like that even need to be brought to a vote, it isnt like hound hunters would get to kill the cats they tree, so where would the harm be just putn back into action it doesnt seem like it would be that hard for wdfw, hell it would be harder on the dogs having to leave a cat in a tree

. i had a big ole walker male named BUCK, there is no way he would have let me take him away from a cat in a tree, he would clearcut a swath around the tree, waitn for the cat to get nocked out of the tree..... oh the good ole days

The gray area is if he keeps the dog on the leash, then he isn't hunting......

I can tell you why the hound hunting was lost last session in two words:

"Hans Dunshee"

he is very powerful right now and the huggers have him in their pocket....

Now, if the state elects more republican reps this fall, we might get hound hunting back..... so don't lose hope, it's possible......

my step father used to run cats and bear back in the day, and now that i am finally able to move back to WA and wanted to start hound hunting myself.....you cant. been in NJ for the last 10yrs thanks to the AF and they had the same political issues out here with the bear hunting. When i first got out here in 2003 they had a season, but i was not able to buy a tag because i had not been through a "bear hunting safety seminar"? in 2005 they closed the season, antis actually have websites telling people to run a bear off with a umbrella or super soaker. finally in 2010 after astronomical increase in bear complaints and the election of a new governor(the previous was receiving money from various animal rights groups) , they reopened the bear season, but the antis now just harass people at the check stations, some go as far as vandalizing hunters vehicles, and it is a gun only hunt.

long story, but, keep the faith, hopefully they will reinstate the hound season for bear and cats.....and baiting for bear(my bowtech wants one baaaad lol)

I mean living on Lost Hwy. for 10yrs. and hunting deer and bear around there, i had never once seen or heard of a cougar being anywhere in the county, let alone taking out a pitbull and messing up another pit and a boxer in 4 days just down the road a ways.

they will bring it back sooner or later, my$.02
