olympics high hunts?
«

I'm curious if anyone has had any success during the high hunt in the Olympics? From looking at the map at wilderness boundaries I can get a fair amount if scouting in this spring/summer with 2 wilderness areas being a short scenic drive through the mountains from my new home.
I have the colonel bob wilderness, wonder mountain wilderness, and mount skokomish wilderness all close to my house.
Any of these 3 worth hunting?

I hunted the Buckhorn Wilderness for several years and always saw deer.

I tried wonder mountain one year and never saw a deer but there were a few meadows so I could see the possiblities. Colonel Bob, cant see that being much though. I only ever heard of one guy getting a buck up there. I did see a three point up there one year before the season but that was a long time ago and a lot of walks up there not seeing anything since. I'd figure on going for the camping trip and a buck being a bonus. I wouldn't think your chances to high.

Wonder mountain can be tricky to get to, but there is flagging that leads the way (no real trail). Or you can hike in from the national park, but have to hike out the forest if you get something.
Col Bob is steep jungle, but the boundary starts near the road by lake quinault so you really wouldn't even have to hike far in.
There are animals around, but during the high hunt it seems many or most of the bucks are nocturnal. This year it was nearly 80 degrees each day and the flies/mosquitoes were bad because of a late hatch because of late snowmelt. Those deer can go find a shady spot under a bush and wait until dark.

Hunted Colonel Bob for elk, years ago. Was six miles in, camping, saw one deer, granted, it was a dandy, but not worth it for me to go back to hunt deer. JMO:/
