Newest Purchase: Browning A-Bolt 7mm
« on: November 25, 2011, 06:17:40 PM »

Just picked up this rifle since I want to shoot big game next season instead of just ducks. Paid $730 for it with the redfield scope on it which i thought was fair. Maybe I got taken but who knows. New I found the gun for like $839 at cabelas. Read the reviews on the scope and they were pretty good.

Just wondering where to start with loads for this rifle. I've been researching a little, and the previous owner gave some really vague information, said it likes winchesters just depends on the weight. I'm not setup for re-loading yet since this is my first rifle. But it's a possibility in the future when I pick up an AR.

Any upgrades i should think about off the bat? Thanks for the input.

I've owned a couple of a-bolts in the past. Great shooting weapons.  I had a 7mm Rem. Mag. and  a 338 Win. Mag. with the b.o.s.s system on the later. Both are capable of sub min groups. Price was right also. Congrades on your purchase
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me

7mm mag. Forgot that part. Most people assume that when I 7mm I guess. Good to know I didn't pay too much. Just thought she looked super clean so I couldn't pass it up.

Any factory ammo suggestions you boys could throw my way would be great. I'm eager to learn anything I can from the old pros. Thanks in advance.

I shoot the Hornady 162 grain SST  out of my 7mm A-Bolt. They're expensive but consistently hit where I want them to.

If you're only hunting deer, you can use just about any ammo that shoots accurately. I would try some of the lower priced stuff first. The Winchester Power Points are low priced and I've had good luck with them in my 270, although I normally only use my handloads for hunting. But the Power Points shoot groups just as small as anything I've ever handloaded, and I've used them for deer once or twice and they kill just fine.

High ammunition cost: keep it in perspective.  You have a gun worth $1000.  You will spend $100s in fuel, etc. every year to scout and hunt.  You probably have $100s more in gear.   If you bought five boxes of factory ammo at $50/box that's $250, but you will almost certainly find something your gun likes.  Pay $100 for two more boxes and you're set for life.  Shoot the other ammo for practice or predators.  Nothing wrong with reloading, but getting into it to save money can end up costing you more.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.
