Duck hunting Spokane?
« on: November 25, 2011, 06:34:22 PM »
Hey guys, wondering if you can point me in the direction of some new areas around Spokane to hunt ducks?  I have tried fishtrap before, but it seems hit and miss. I am lookin for a spot closer to town than my old stomping grounds in the tri cities.  I'd be willing to pay a use fee of there are some places like that around, as long as its cheaper than the gas to go to Kennewick.  And I don't have a boat, so it's only areas I can access with waders I am looking for.  Thanks.

Hmm ... I'm not aware of any pay to use places, but I'll keep my ears open.  You're right about Fishtrap - hit and miss.  Can be awesome though if you are there on a day when some fresh northerns show up.

yeah...over here its tough to find ponds that you can wade in all the way across ....I take it you don't have a reliable duck dog???... try to go scouting to find the fields and then try get permission is about all you can do... if funds permit, a little boat would open up a hole new world of duck hunting available for you...Eloika, Long lake, west medical, Pend Oreille etc... good luck

Oh I have a good duck dog, he just won't set out and retrieve my decoys.  I am just looking for spots you don't need a boat to access.

have you looked north to the PO river?  I know you dont have a boat but I think there are some places that are accessible on foot.

I am pretty much in the same boat you're in. Plus I am new to waterfowl all together. I am prob going to try West Medical it's not too far from town.

ok so i did a quick search for state land areas around spokane and medical lake and found that the whole west side of west medical is huntable....but also found some little ponds to the west of it that are marked as being in state land...which may be worth a try...    so you might try this...just paste it in your browser...hope it works ...

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=w+lehn+rd+and+S+ladd+rd&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x549e6a590b47c321:0x7cbce45151ffd29c,S+Ladd+Rd+%26+W+Lehn+Rd,+Medical+Lake,+WA+99022&gl=us&ei=dSrVTvneI6zViAK_o42YDg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CB4Q8gEwAA

the site that shows the state land was:         http://www.ecy.wa.gov/services/gis/maps/county/mpl/mplco.htm

it seems to be relatively accurate but doesnt show it all and doesnt show when farmers have agreements with the state about livestock etc...   hope this helps a little

I am aware of those ponds, the only problem is when you drive that road and you get to the gates there are signs saying that the land is leased to Spokane Bird Dog Association. The other thing is when you look and the game pamphlet, it leads you to that land as a dog training area. So which is it, leased land or dog training? There are a lot of wheat fields in the area. I was just going to go out there and see what happens. But that may be a  :bdid: . What do you guys think?

The area to the West of the DNR west shore/West Medical area is private, posted farmland and it comes before you reach the Spokane Bird Dog Club property; seperated from it by a county road; Thus, the area East of that road is part of this rather large private parcel sandwiched between West Medical DNR land and the SBDC property. Respect private property and don't trespass.

sheesh who said anything about trespassing... all I said is you can hunt on the west side of the lake AND that there is an area marked as state land further west...which we now know is the dog training site....

Thanks for the info, I'll do some scouting at medical lake and see if it's huntable.
