Seasoning a used gun...
« on: July 12, 2008, 09:30:34 PM »
I just picked up a used 50cal for a backup to my backup and have a question. On my other muzzy ,which were bought new I seasoned the barrel befor shooting, and it seemed to make a differance to ease of loading lack of fouling etc. The bore on the one I just bought is nice an clean with no pitting although its been shot quite abit, so do you think I should go ahead and season the barrel or just shoot as is? Thanks for any advice on this.

JDB, thats the one I use, but Ive been thinking of tring the Black Ice. I scrube the barrel with boiling hot water  let it dry a bit then run a few passes of lapping compound, clean again, then heat the barrel with my wifes hair dryer.........but dont tell her...lol and then swab the barrel with bore butter while its still hot. Let her cool down and run a few dry patches. Seems to work real good. You do the same?

for the most part yes but I use borebutter's natural solvent instead of water seems to work very well.

I'd season it ... I also use the bore butter method!
