Toutle Cow Down!
« on: November 26, 2011, 10:15:02 AM »
My buddy got her yesterday at 1030 or so.  How'd the rest the Toutle guys do?  I only heard one other shot...which was strange to me.

Ya we didn't get to spend to much time seeing the unit. But if I had to pick an area, I'd hang around the 245-249 roads...if you can still get to them. Just a hunch :-)

my family had 2, my dad took 4 days to fill his and my sis got hers yesterday. it took me two days to find elk, once we did they had plenty of chances and both tags are now filled. not nearly the same tag it used to be, but still good. i think a guy now needs to do a little homework or atleast scouting a day or two to be successful. used to be no scouting required, just drive a few hours and youd have plenty of chances, but just doesnt seem to be as good any more. not sure if its lack of elk or just because they have 5 times as many permits as they used too

I have the archery tag Dec 1-15. After you all fill your tags, and feel in the giving mood shoot me a P.M. I need to close the deal on my tag in five days with any luck.

I think there's plenty of elk, but in all the time I spent during my bull hunt and now this cow hunt it's pretty obvious to me that they hang out in the reprod.  Get high and glass into it.  It's crazy how well they can hide in there.  We'd be glassing a hill side, think we'd seen everything, then wham, a herd "appears" out of thin air.  Sneaky *censored*s for being upwards of 700 pounds :)

My dad has a tag.  We will be hitting it again monday until the season is over.

Dad got it done yesterday on a nice fat calf.  Only saw three elk yesterday.  2 bulls, one of which was a good one.  And the calf my dad got.

Our group went five for five on the toutle cow tags this year.  Great time with my dad and his best friend, my wife killed her first animal and so did a friend of mine, think they are hooked for life. Killed 2 on Thanksgiving day, home in time for turkey. Then worked the weekend and killed one on the following monday, tues. and last day. try and get some pictures. 4 out of five in the truck whole without a spool or whinch, someone up above knew the freezers were empty. Access was a little tougher during the week but a lot less people. Great times....

Sounds like there must be almost a year around season on the toutle maybe thats why it;s not as good as it used to be. Glad people are getting there elk but do the elk ever get a rest.

The St. Helens herd has out grown its winter range.  We either let them die of starvation or reduce the size of the herd.
