Elk Heights area

Went up there today saw three cows and a little yearling. Saw quite a few deer though saw 8 a nice buck with some does bedded 25 yds. off the road but of course its permit only late season. talk to some other hunters they said they saw alot of deer too. Did anyone get an elk up in there?

I went up there Thanksgiving day and there were alot of people hunting up there so decided to back out and wait for later when all the traffic in there calms down a bit before hitting it again. But did see a small band of elk in there but they were pretty skiddish

Yeah they are very skiddish we went to the right road and went up a ways it's hard to sneak up on them with that crunchy snow.

I was in there today, lots o deer including a 3pt buck. Crunchy snow and no elk for me. Didnt hear the shots but another hunter I was talking to said he heard a bunch of rifle or muzzleloader shots near him

Yea that figures. We went up high and had elk tracks everywhere and we saw a nice 3x4 he was a dandy, he was with three does and they were all bedded 25 yds off the road so we got out and checked them out. At first we didn't see him all I saw was a doe so got at she spooked and stopped at 50 broadside then the buck walked out do the trees right behind her he was also broadside at 50. Now if it was only early season he would of got an arrow flung at him.

they gave my buddy a ride up the road , they where mucks they had two spikes , apparantly they each get two deer and a elk , they where road hunting , It seems to me that they dont get out and hunt much , but I guess they dont have too.

Why is it legal for anyone to be allowed to hunt with rifles in a GMU that is open for late archery???  Sure seems like a hunting accident waiting to happen!

If I'm up there (which I will be) and someone shoots in my direction, I'll be emptying my .40 cal. clip in their direction to let them know I'm not a deer or an elk!  Frigging idiots shouldn't be allowed to use modern weapons in an archery GMU!

That good ol BOLT decision. Just works wonders for the indians/natives. Last year I was coming home from elk hunting in that area. I saw two lifted (6 inch) chevy trucks newer style with light bars, dual winches, swampers etc. and the trucks had Muckleshoot indian plates on it. I wonder how long those trucks would last in the woods left alone

thats really scary knowing theres a "season overlap" and not have it posted in the regs. even scarier that they wont change it until someone gets shot! and thats maybe. seasons may not apply to all races, but some common sense should be used by lawmakers and so on. watch, someone will get shot and bowhunters will be required to wear orange!

I can see it now, Archery hunter killed or injured my NA hunting off res. Hunter/hunter family sued the state for allowing unregulated riffle hunting in a unit open to archery only.  hunter\family wills multi billion dollar law suite against the state of WA.

You cant sue the tribe, so just sue the state os WA.

I'm not defending the NA's but I believe it states in the regs when there's a season overlap that bow hunters are required to wear orange. But then it's not a state regulated season is it? Bring your lawyer with ya.

yeah it states season overlaps, BUT there was not a season overlap in 336 for late elk.....................

I sure don't agree with you guys who think the tribes seasons shouldn't overlap our archery seasons for safety reasons. If that's the case, then what about bear season in Setpember and October, which overlaps archery and muzzleloader deer and elk seasons?

I do wish the tribes would have to follow our seasons when hunting off reservation, but who doesn't? That's for conservation reasons, not safety.

i dont mind if the seasons overlap at all. everyone deserves their chance to hunt. however, i do mind if i have no knowledge of them overlapping. if there are hunters out in the woods with guns and buck fever (which we all get ) the last thing i want to do is be out there walking around in my camo and possibly be mistaken for an animal. thats all im sayin. if i had never joined the site and read this thread, i would have no knowledge of this. i have been hunting that area for many years and never had a clue. i will be planning my future trips based on safer hunting times

Just stay away from the roads and you wont get shot . Accually raffle winners can hunt those units open to archery aswell and hunt with a firearm , but they must wear orange why ? there the ones with the gun .

What about all the people out there cutting firewood, camping, hiking, etc. during ANY hunting season in which rifles are allowed? Are they all in danger because they're not wearing orange? Do they need to shut down the woods to everyone except hunters during hunting season?

Really, because they have something that says they are Native American on the vehicle?  So Dr. Duke is your first name David?  Look it up if you have the ability.  By the way it is the BOLDT decision.  There are people of all races that are screwing things up.... however being racist is not going to make it better.   Guess I need to get my stickers off the back of my truck so I don't have to worry about some idiot screwing with it when I am out hunting?   WOW pretty impressive for an injury Lawyer to say the things you did up there in your quote above...

i found 2 deer gut piles and someone tore stuff up driving around a tank trap to keep from having to pack one of those deer out, they made a mess trying to get around on both sides. i dont know that it was indians i just assumed poachers, either way.

I'm pretty sure there is no chance this would happen.  It hasn't happened yet and I really don't see it happening ever.  Does that mean it couldn't happen, no, anythings possible and if the Tribal Member did commit the mistake then that person can be held liable not the Tribe.

I was in the Mts. during bow season scouting with my rifle and didn't have any problems with any other hunters, I did however come across some back packers that wanted to push my buttons but after a few quick words in a civil manner they kept on walking and there were no other issues.

I have encountered other NON-TRIBAL HUNTERS and for the most part they've been respectable, not all but most when we were deep in the timber.  Not nearly as much when near the roads.  And to say Tribal Members are the only ones running around out there without orange on is a little absurd.  I came across at least 7 hunters that were wandering around and I spoke with half of them that were not wearing orange and they didn't have anything to say. 

My issues when out in our Ceded Areas have always been safety for myself and my family.  Even now I remove anything visible from inside of my truck and leave it at home that would identify my truck as being a Tribal Members truck just because I don't want anything to happen to it. 

Duck, I got the humor of your comment but again sometimes people take things serious and/or different and like bigbulls stated we can only hope that nobody would do anything to anybodies vehicles.
