Tried to make myself stay out of this post but after reading it all I could not. First of all whoever had a range of scores on their buck from 170-190 had some incompetent scorers. Unless it is a very unique non typical animal the range should be about 2-3 inches on a 180 class deer and really should be less than that. If you do a meticulous job scoring there may be an eighth here or there but a range of 20 inches on a typical deer if you are using the same scoring criteria is absurd. Also when you throw a rough score on a buck in the field 9 times out of 10 when you really sit down and take your time later the score shrinks. To get proper mass measurements you have to hunt around for the smallest spots between the points which is rarely done in the field. Many times competent hunters who know how to score say every mass measurement is over 5 inches and when it is actually scored after the drying period maybe the base is over 5 but rarely are the others. Which brings me to the last point which is shrinkage during the drying period. If scored properly every buck will shrink from 1-3 inches in score during the drying period. Even shed horns if picked up very fresh will shrink especially in the mass measurements in a couple months. Without seeing this buck from several angles I would not guess a score. But generally speaking based on the entire thread I would bet a lot of money IF officially scored later the gross score will be much closer to 185 than 191. But if you say ROUGH green field score of 191 most can live with that as we know it will end up a bit less than that.

I pretty much agree with your summation on scoring Romulus, I usually try to underestimate a buck for those reasons.  :twocents:

A lot of guys just enjoy throwing out a score for general conversation when they see a photo on the forum. I don't think most are too serious, just having fun..... :twocents:

Jeep guy lets see your throphy wall of washington bucks . I'm in with phool and I'll take that bet . Killing a 190 buck in any state on public land is no easy task . Thats a assume buck and congrats to the hunter and all his friends for getting the job done . Thats huge preasure with a tag like that and to arm chair hunt and disscount the throphy is BS.

1 4/8?????? aren't you a School teacher now? Damn Rangers 1 1/2?

They are scored in 1/8th's ;)....and no I'm not a school teacher.
pathfinder is
Do you remember the LAST time you made me go to WA-Hi? Remember the angry teachers and school board. Im not allowed in High Schools after that. REMEMBER!!! Becuase some IDIOT watched me give my Aunt and my cousin a hug and said it was inappropriate becuase I was in Uniform...(roughly 5 years ago)
Yes, I am.  But I guessed my score in even numbers (no 8ths).  And just for the record, as Phool said, antlers are always scored in 8ths (1/8, 2/8, 3/8 etc...).

And by the way, in MY class you would have learned that.  I don't teach math.  I teach Rifle Marksmanship and Hunter Education.  My advanced students actually DO learn to score antlers.  Next time I teach that subject I'll invite you to come sit in on the class.  No promises, but I might even be able to teach you to count in 8ths.... :chuckle:

Had to bring this one back up. I was out this last weekend looking at bucks and i stopped and ask a lady permission to hike up the mtn behind the house she let which i thought was really cool. Anyway she proceded to tell me the gov buck was shot up their and told me her grandson was the one to spot the buck and they called the man who shot him. All that to say the guy who shot the buck sent this kid a huge gift card to Cabelas I thought that was a class act thing to do and i wanted to give him props for that. I know this story is true but i cannot tell you the hunters name theirfore i do not know if this is the same guy all she told me is the guy who shot the gov buck i am assuming it is this Paul guy way to go.

If you see such big bucks all the time on public land and are bettin on gettin one bigger in the next 2 seasons then why did you just post up a bunch of "gnarly" bucks that werent even close to the 160 mark? lol you dont even know the guy so theres no need to bash him for a legal hunt.

Congrats to the hunter and good for him to give the boy a gift.
