Tag Question

Okay so this feels like a really dumb question, based upon my reading of the regs it sounds like we just walk into the sportsman store and buy a tag. The way people talk on here there is more of a lottery that you have to get into.

I know there are the special raffles that you can enter but I'm also wondering about applying for a tag in 2 different units? Can a person get more than one tag a year?

Completely new to this hunting thing and finally got the bow all tuned up and the field tips came earlier this week. Going to be putting in a lot of time at the range this winter. Hoping to be ready to go by nice summer. Wanting to start scouting a bit in Jan/Feb. Got some things to get done before then though.

Thanks for the advice. This forum has been a big part of me getting into hunting. The stories on here give me the itch to get out there more than anything else. Looking forward to the pursuit.

You can apply and be drawn for more than one unit or hunt but you can only kill one animal.  Once you have filled one tag, the other in void.

That makes sense. Always been frustrated by the way the regulations are created for hunting/fishing. They just don't make as much sense as they should. Guess I should have studied law

You've got almost a year to study up on the regulations and of course read through posts on this site. If you'd like to apply for special permits you need to do it by late spring. By next summer you should have a better idea of whats going on.

You can buy a general season tag over the counter, like at sportsmans.  There's an additional lottery system for the right to hunt off-limit units, cows in bull only units, bulls in spike only, outside of the standard season, etc...  They can be considered desirable, so the state makes a lottery system out of it to get more money and control the hunt.

I've got a tag for deer, and one for elk, both modern rifle bought over the counter.  I applied to the lottery system for some of the special tags but my number didn't come up, so I get to hunt with the masses during the regular season.

This is all starting to make a lot more sense. So you can buy permits to hunt the deer, elk, bear seasons, or be drawn for the quieter (animals less disturbed) times.

Now I just need the camo and to get the bow shooting straight.

Not exactly. You buy TAGS, not permits.

The permits are what you draw, after purchasing and submitting a special permit application.

You did. Sorry I got the terminology backwards. Glad to start this for next year, going to take about that long before its all straight in my head

Yeah, there alot of terms that mean similar thkngs, but aee completely different.
The basics: Tags allow you to harvest an animal.
Permits allow you enhanced opportunaties at making a harvest.

Once you buy you license and specify your hunting preferrences, you are issued a tag( IE: Archery Deer, Eastern Modern Fire Elk, etc.) Depending on what tag you have, you can then apply for permit hunts. The regs will specify what tag (if any) you have to hold to be able to apply to specific hunts. If your application is drawn, you are issued a permit, allowing you access to that specific hunt using your existing tag, with the exception being second deer tags, where you can purchase a second tag.

Even if you don't think you want to put in for anything special next spring, start building up your points by buying bonus points only. I didn't do this my first few years of hunting and I regret it.
