Leupold VX3 CDS question??
« on: December 03, 2011, 06:35:57 PM »
I am looking in to buying a vx3 with the cds turrets and was wondering what yardage i could go out to. I will be shooting a 300 yard 0 in my .300wsm and would like to be able to shoot out to 700 yards preferably, or 600 in the worst case. So i guess my question is can the dials be made from 300-700 or how would that work?

Also does anybody have a preference about the model? 4.5-14x40 or 4.5-14x50

If you have one of these your info would help a lot!

Yes they will easily go to 700 on a 300 WSM.  The 50mm is brighter but larger, heavier, and must be mounted higher.

They have about 70 MOA of elevation adjustment.

I was just talking with someone today about it.  He said he sales guy told him that the only difference between the VX2 and 3 model is the gold ring thickness and the cost.  Now, that is only one man's opinion.  I was testing out some of the same models and I liked the 4 14 40.  I don't have one, yet, but sure liked the optics.

Well when you call in with all your info they will ask what bullet, grain, zero, elevation etc.. and make the dial based on the information you provide. Now that dial will be specific to that bullet and sight in. So if you decide to change bullets and sight in distance that dial will no longer apply and will have to call Leopold with all new data.
Judge if you want, we are all going to die.

A 300 yard zero seems a little extreme to me. My 300 wsm/180gr balistic tip load is starting out at 2900fps. Like all my rifles I zero at 100 yards, that puts the bullet about 12" low at 300 yards, I use M1't do dial, 4MOA in this case. If the turrets are set on 4 MOA (300 yard zero) that puts the 100 yard POI 4" high. Just my opinion but 4" is too much for my likeing but then even though most of my practice is for long range, most of the shots I've taken at game have been inside of 200 yards and a lot of those inside of 100 yards.

Why would you want to be a foot low at 300? Just my opinion, if your on the eastside that is a standard shot you have to make. Times are changing and long shots are being made, some people dont believe it, it happens. And 300 yards is not considered a long shot to me.

I have the vx3 4.5-14x40 and like it lots.  Never have wished I had went with the 50.  It's mounted on a 300 rum with turrets.

I think you misunderstood my post, not suprising at all as I sometimes have trouble putting my thoughts on the screen. I zero my scopes dead on at 100 yards, use m1 turrets, a drop chart on the stock , and a rangefinder to dial in longer range.

They will only build them out as far as your load is still packing 1,000 ft/lbs of energy (they'll give you a little more if your "target shooting"), which will still be more than 700 yards for that gun and you can have them make zero wherever you want.  We just had a few done on the 6.5-20X40 and we never thought we should've got the 50mm objective instead.  It's a sweet set up!

that chart on the rifle is classy  :chuckle: I have the same thing on my gun! What scope is that on the wood stock rifle? Looks spendy, but perfect for long range shooting.

zero for 200 and you should be able to get out to 800 yards with the CDS dial.

A few of us have VX-3L 4.5-14x50 CDS scopes, in short they are awesome, use same mounts, lets in a ton of light.  If you zero at 300 your turrett will go up to probably 900yds.  I think my 7mm mag turrett goes up to 750 or so being zeroed at 200yds.

We zero at 200yds on our stuff, although for wyoming lopers we did zero everything at 300yds.

Ok so i think this is the model that i am thinking about. You still have a full circle and duplex right, just like a regular scope. And you can use regular 40mm bases? If you dont mind me asking where and how much did you buy it for?
