Attention 2011 Moose tag holders- please read and reply
« on: December 05, 2011, 08:18:55 AM »
I have been hearing about moose with tapeworm cysts in the skelatal muscle.  It's likely Taenia krabbei and is supposed to be safe to eat if the meat is cooked.  I have talked to 6 hunters that harvested moose and 3 had them in the meat... Can any of you that harvested moose please reply back with a unit # and whether or not the animal you harvested appeared to be infected?

Thank you!
Bart

I read somewhere that one tag holder got his tag reissued after he showed the meat to the WDFW.  Don't know if he killed a second one or not.  That would really suck if this happened to me.

one hunter in Pend Oreille Co got a new tag issued after he dug two quarts of worms from the meat in the hind quarters.  :puke:

It's not quite what you wanted, but when we cut up my grandmas moose this year it had them. But it is a reservation moose so no unit number. We was issued another tag for another one.

If it's the same story that I'm thinking, he killed a bigger bull with the second tag which also had the worms. :dunno:

I heard the same thing too...I am up to 11 points and my son has like 7 points for youth tag.  I hope if one of us get luck to draw a tag next year we get a clean moose.

They have been in the Moose in Canada and Alaska for years.  I talked to one outfitter up there (Canada) who flatly told me that if I've eaten parts of 2 different Moose from there, then I have eaten the worms.  I never saw them in the meat, but he said the previous year his hunters had killed 12 Moose and 8 of them had the cysts or worms.  This is a different outfitter than the one I hunted with.  Now 2 quarts of them out of two hindquarters seems a bit much to me for sure.  My Selkirk Moose from 2009 never had any and I processed it entirely myself.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Also, the wolves have been around for a damn long time in the portion of NW Montana where I grew up and the Moose my Dad killed this year did not have any worms.

Whats up with the sqweems.   You'd be amazed at how many worms you have eatin with fish and everything else.   Nothing like a little extra protein.   I think its a new excuse to get another tag.  LOL  Very glad I already have had mine becasue you suckers who haven't drawn yet NEVER WILL NOW :chuckle:

Cow moose from 127 Mica I got this year seemed to taste pretty good? Are they easily noticed?

Bull moose taken this October in unit 111 had them.  We processed the meat ourselves and found several of them.  They were also in the liver.  We didn't give our dogs any of the bones or meat scraps.  This poor moose was also loaded with ticks and the meat is tougher than an old boot (not that I've eaten many old boots).

bull moose harvested from 113, all meat processed not one worm in it. 41" bull and the meat was as tender as stilleto high heels.

22 years 3 months and 4 days, happily retired from the U.S Army.

Any of you guys that eat bear could expect the same thing in many cases, thats why I don't touch it.  I gave my meat away, and I won't shoot one now unless its a good trophy.  Let two walk this year for that reason.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.
