Willapa Hills and Ryderwood scouting
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:20:00 PM »
Hi All, I really want to start scouting now for next year's archery elk season's in these 2 units.  I do not ask for any honey holes, but would like to know what access is like up in there during the archery seasons?  Does weyco keep the place gated?  If so, do they let you drive in to pick up a downed animal like some of their other operations?

Is there some typical areas of access into these units?  I tried going in up Forks creek, and some of the other northern and eastern access points this weekend after I tagged out on a cow first thing Sat morning.  I also tried accessing from Trap creek (Williams Unit) but again, hit closed gates.  I actually like gates and using the mtn bike to get me back in away from the crowds.  Any help, PM'd or on here would be greatly appreciated.

Thx!  Rob

I used to hunt a lot in both units, and accessed them both from Pe Ell usually from the 3rd st gate, also hunted trap creek a lot. Now the gates are closed but they let weyco employees drive in, nothing I hate more than pedalling my butt off only to have trucks driving around me. I love closed gates and biking in, thats how I hunt I just am not a fan of doing it with  my competition being in trucks, still not a bad place to hunt though considering most people have the same thinking as me, so I imagine the pressure in there is pretty limited.

This should help...

both are great areas for whatever animal you have a tag for.  lots of miles on foot or bike and doing your home work will put you in prime areas. I have hunted there for years now and i have noticed that the elk tend to migrate all around depending on the time of year. Its a good late season archery hunt if you strike out early season. you can pm me if you have any particular questions

Yeah, I checked out the 3rd street gate on Sunday as well, much closer to the weyco yard then years ago before the washout.  So I take it you see weyco guys hunting in there during archery seasons, from their trucks?  Darn....

Is there any good access points coming in from the south end of the units?  Or are most people accessing from the north?  I also want to do some scouting in Fall River as well... Mostly looking for sign to know where they hang.  I would love some bull areas where there is no people, makes calling them in much nicer!

Good luck finding a place where they hang and there is no people. The fall river unit has been getting pretty busy since Weyerhaueser locked up most of their land in the Willapa hills unit... :twocents:
