Just goes to show why people need the option to be armed now more than anytime in the last 50 years as the USFWS is planning to put large predators all over the U.S.....

Kinda sad as I have spent a majority of my life in the woods comfortable being unarmed with cats and bears alike, and generally if I felt I needed to be armed it was from two legged predators.  This however does change things dramatically.

Sad part about this is that the pro wolf crowd still will not admit it can be a real problem down the road.Until hikers hiking the freeway trails cut through the back country and they become scoobie snacks will any thought be put into this problem we will soon face.

Thank you.  We all must collect most important information to threw all bloody cases to committiees face to adjust new law in future.  We cannot miss any one case that caused in Wa.  Bring cameras and video if you can.     Keep fighting.

Thats  , if having your throat ripped out and bleeding to death is their definition of "quickly"

Like Boneaddict said I to have spent most of my life in the outback feeling perfectly safe unarmed, but that is changeing.  Wolves are supposed to eat only the OLD and CRIPPLED so at near 77 years old I don't get around real lively and I'm starting to feel like easy prey.  So more and more I'm packing the 41, while fishing or out for a walk, just extra wieght I hope I never need.

I listed this unfortunate attack and others in my communications to the WDFW Commissioners hoping that these grizzly facts about wolves would help them see clearly through the pro-wolf propaganda smokescreen before making a decision on the WA Wolf Conservation and Management Plan.  Unfortunately, we are now stuck with the WDFW having to officially count 15 breeding pairs in our state.  That is why I posted the suggestion in another forum thread that we (hunters, ranchers, etc.) need to convince the WDFW to let us help them count the 15 breeding pairs that will most likely exist in the very near future.  Wolves typically produce 5 to 6 pups per litter; their populations can grow quickly.  15 breeding pairs needs to be officially verified ASAP.

Here is the wolf attack information I sent to the WDFW Commissioners in several communications prior to their decision on the wolf plan:

2005: Canada – 22-year-old Ontario college student, Kenton Carnegie, was killed by wolves while working for a survey company as part of his university’s co-op program.

2007: Canada – Wolves attack two families while tobogganing.  The wolves were headed toward the children.  Their dog, a Rottweiler-cross fended off the attack until the families could get to their vehicle.

This is real folks.  Wolves are large, vicious, apex predators that operate in packs.  Any animal, including humans that are targeted as prey or for surplus/sport killing by a pack of wolves will have little chance of survival.  Wolves operate from instinct, hunger, and opportunity.  Unfortunately, wolf advocates seem to deny these facts.  Also, in my opinion, as wolf populations grow and enjoy their unwarranted protection from appropriate management of their numbers, we will most likely be reading and hearing more about these types of tragedies in the coming years.

Regarding the impact on elk populations, the RMEF has stated the following in one of their communications (RMEF letter to the Defenders of Wildlife and the Western Wildlife Conservancy):

"Studies show that each wolf kills up to 23 elk from November through April; that equates to up to 40,000 elk killed in six months. This number does not include those elk killed for food by wolves from May through October. While the number of elk killed per wolf from May through October is less than the number from November through April, it is still considerable; and that is just the elk killed for food. These numbers do not account for those elk simply killed by wolves (surplus killing) and yes, that does happen. Nowhere near the majority of these elk kills are simply the sick and the old."
