Good tanner for taxidermy work?
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:23:11 AM »
I have been doing some taxidermy as a hobby over the past few years on a couple of the deer I have shot, and am interested in doing my deer from this year as well.  The ones that I have done before I have prepped and tanned the capes myself.  However, I would like to find someone who will tan this one for me and get it to a state where it is ready to be mounted.  It is a lot of work to deal with these capes!

I figured with all of the accomplished taxidermists on this site, I could find some good recommendations.  I live in eastern Washington, about an hour south of Spokane.  I suppose I could ship it off somewhere too, but I'm not sure what is involved with shipping a hide.

Thanks.

I use Kettle falls tannery, I do not know if he will take a customer in though that is not a Licensed Taxidermist. If you send something to the tannery, it still has to be split, turned and salted. The only thing you are saving on is the actual tanning process.

....and when you get it back from the tannery your still gpping to have to do some prep work before mounting.  Though comercial tanned capes are great to work with when they are done right.

I would second Joe @ Kettle Falls Tannery but like BLKBEARKLR said, not sure he tans for individuals that are not taxidermists.

I don't mind the splitting and turning, I was just hoping to get out of the shaving.  Do most commercial tanneries handle that for you?

You would have to get a taxidermist and have them take it to joe. I can call him to find out who the closest taxidermist is to you. All my capes go to him but I  am about 2 hours from. Give me a call of you would like me to do that for you
