Best buck you've seen taken by someone else while hunting?
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:49:54 AM »
This was on my first archery hunt down in Oregon. This guy was hunting the same canyon as us and when we saw him with this at the end of the day I had to snap some photos.  I had his email and sent them to him, never heard back on the score.
Beautiful spot and stalk archery buck!

When a bruiser is taken out of the same area you are hunting it is always mixed emotions...happy for the hunter, but wondering "what if" on your own hunt.

What have you guys seen the "neighbors" get while hunting the same area? Any stories?

I was hunting Ft Lewis fifteen years ago during rifle season & had a nice clear cut scouted.  I was walking down the gravel road to the clear cut & walked by a guy sitting on a stool under a large evergreen tree.  It was drizzling & he was keeping dry, he was right on the road I walked down.  I talked to him for a minute & listened to him talk about how he had these deer all figured out. I also looked over his Marlin lever action  35 cal rifle with open sights.  It was about two hours till dark & I walked on to my clear cut. I didn't see anything but heard a shot right before dark, sure enough as I walked back to the truck he had a bruiser  4x4 blacktail with eye guards down.  It was a beautiful buck. He had already slit its throat with his marine K bar knife & was going to start gutting it. Guess he wasn't mounting it & said he always "bleeds " them.   I walked away from him the first time thinking he was a knuckle head for sitting there but he showed me. Still the biggest blacktail I have ever seen.   Mike

Here's the best buck I've seen taken by someone else while hunting.  My dad and I were hunting together and he thought he saw something white flicker down below us on a ridge.  He actually thought it was a bird that flew threw the timber.  I asked him "are you sure it wasn't a deers ass?".  He said he didn't think so, but we walked down to check anyways.  As we got close to the spot, he said "it was right over there by that opening".  Just then I caught some movement and this buck had his head down on the ground and was trying to sneak out.  I yelled at dad "there's a good buck, shoot".  The deer was only about 30 yards away to start with, and only made it another 30 before piling up.  I couldn't have been happier for him, plus it was his first mule deer and taken with one of those overpriced non-resident Washington tags...

Here's another Washington buck that dad took while I was lucky enough to be hunting beside him.  We spotted it at first light and had to watch for a while before he could get a shot.  I was sitting beside him watching through the binocs as he took the shot.  Another overpriced non-resident tag notched... :chuckle:

The best buck I saw taken while hunting was a big 4x4 with a cheater off it's right side and double drops about 10" long corking off each side.  It was in 08 I believe and it was archery hunting with the late tag, in the entiat unit.  I looked through the archives to see if anything was posted about it.  I have a pic somewhere that was taken down at coopers general store.   Man what a buck!!  I ended up tag soup after passing on some dinks and some blown stalks on big bucks but saw nothing like that buck!  Did anyone on here see it or have pics of this buck?   I would love to see it again. I'll start digging for mine.

Thanks 400, dad sure was excited to notch a couple of his tags on muleys.  Every year he came to WA he would ask "are there muleys where we are going?", so after a couple years I just decided that we would concentrate on muleys for the first week, then switch to whitetails as a backup for the last part of the season.  It worked 2 out of the last 3 years (this year he took a whitetail).

Missed two shots at this buck at first light back in 07, my dad ended up getting him with his 338 A bolt. My dad's biggest mule deer to date. Missing that buck sucked but I'm happy that my dad was able to get a good deer and I was there when he got it.

If you're going to miss, having your hunting partner get it especially when its your dad makes the miss a little easier to swallow.

I'd love to get my dad on a big mule deer but he can't hike the hills these days.
