Savage Weather Warrior 16 or 116?
« on: December 12, 2011, 02:23:02 PM »

Hello!

I have been doing some research on a new rifle and I have my eye on the Savage Weather Warrior chambered in .308   :IBCOOL:

Wondering what you guys thought of this rifle in general and also what do they mean in terms of long action (116) vs. short action (16)?  Is that trigger pull?  Excuse my ignorance but I am a just a third year hunter.

The rifle would be used to hunt deer, predators, and hopefully that bear I saw earlier this year that I had no tag for!!!   :bash:

Thanks for any tips you can provide as to what action is better for what I plan on using the rifle for.

Cheers!

- Jg

The .308 is a short action so go with that UNLESS... you plan on changing to a long action by changing out the bolthead and barrel. The only real difference is you will move the bolt farther on a long action as it is meant for longer rounds than a short action. The .308 is a short action round whereas the 30-06 is a long action round. If you're going to stay with the .308 then get it in short action so follow up shots are quicker. Changing out calibers using the same action and stock almost makes sense. It's cool but it ends up costing the same as another savage so unless you're wildcatting just buy a different rifle for the different rounds you wanna shoot.  :twocents:

The 16 is a short action 308, 243, 22-250 etc, the 116 is the long action 270, 30-06, 7mm Mag, 300 win mag etc.

There is no way to go from a short action to a long action, however, you can build a Savage 308 or 243 on a long action (30-06 sized) receiver. The cost involved can be equal to a new rifle but usually what you get for the added expense is a better barrel. You can purchase a new CBI barrel for $280 which is a entry level brand of Kreiger and still have a very good shooter. I purchased a mdl 16 from Cabela's and switched it to a Shilen 22-250 and it's an amazingly accurate rifle. I also have a Stevens 200 which is a long action in 7mm Mag, I will be converting that to a CBI barrel in 243Win with an 8 twist for 600 - 1000 yard stuff.

The nice thing about Savage is the ability to change out bolt heads and the ease of re-barreling the action, no gunsmith is required just a couple of very easy to use tools.
Checkin' wind and makin' smoke.
That's how I roll...

Thanks for the info guys.  I just want to take this opportunity and say how much I love this website!!!!

Always learning something when I login and have a look around or ask a question like this.

600-1000 yard shot?  Wow... that would be something.  You guys ever see "Shooter" the movie?  Love that film!
