Mini- 14 for a Rem. 700 vtr

Well I went to the gun shop today and was offered a mini 14 for my remington 700 vtr. Both are chambered in 223, both are in good condition, neither of them have a scope. I've only shot a mini once and it was a ton of fun, but how are they for hunting? Can they make accurate shots out to 300 yards, being semi auto and all? You guys think I should make the trade? The mini has a 20 round clip with it too believe.

An AR would be sweet but I'm trying to get rid of my VTR. And I don't think anyone would make that trade. Even if I paid along with the VTR.

3in MOA is good for a mini14 out of the box......and only the best ammo might do that.  To get one fixed up to sub 1in MOA can run up to a grand, depending on what you want......you provide the gun of course, so may as well start out with something good......Armalite makes a super predator model in .223, guaranteed  1in MOA...I am looking at them seriously.

i dont know.... i've owned two mini 14's and they were both great rifles. I think that for the right price theyre a good alternative to an AR. but with AR's coming down in price its a crapshoot. i got my mini's for 300 bucks. they were fun to plink with. do you really need to be that accurate at 300 yds? how often are you actually going to be shooting that far? if i'm going plinking i'm shooting stuff at 100yds like bowling pins or clay pigeons. if i'm getting that kind of rifle i just want to throw a lot of lead down range i dont care about 1" groups @ 200yds+. thats what my bolt actions are for... I had a lot of love for my mini's i just never shot them that often.

Why not just sell the Remington first and then build or buy an AR? The mini's are pretty much junk for any kind of precision shooting unless you pour a ton of money into them and just about any AR will shoot as well or better even after that.

  I got mine just to plink with. If you really want a mini they come in different grades. 4 I think. I think one is match quality. I'll see if I can find the link.

Mini 14's are trash! When it comes to accuracy. I see used ones here in pawn shops for 379.00, if they want to trade you a 14 for your VTR, there's a reason.

Mini's are great! As an assault carbine. They are not expected to be long range tack drivers by design. The new models appear to be much more accurate than issue grades, but yes there are match grade rifles, but you're not going to get one for the price of a cheap AR. If you want one for the fun factor, buy one. Don't get ripped off trading your VTR.

Definitely have a better predator gun in the vtr. Don't trade for a mini 14! It would be a huge downgrade! Look at all the professional predator hunters, most of them hunt with a bolt action. As far as civilian long range shootin there is no better action than a bolt action. I would either sell the vtr and get another bolt rifle or if you want something to p,ay with as well get an AR.

A mini14 can be a MOA or sub MOA for under 100 bucks if you do the research, mine shoots around 1/2" groups at 100yds with my reloads and 3 simple bolt ons.

But if you want out of the box accuracy, get a bolt gun, or an AR. I love my mini14, because its accurate and different.

Why own one when you can shoot someone else's to find out that most of them suck?

If you have an accurate mini-14 without any help than you are lucky indeed. I would love to have one that would consistently shoot 1/2 MOA or better like a varmint caliber should.

Me personally I like wood stocks. I like the M1 Garand action and the carbine size. And it is a plinker with class. I'm not at all into assault rifle appearance.

This is kind of turning into the Ford vs Chevy thing. You got to get what you want. Shoot for fun or shoot seriously you decide.

I have never been a fan of the 14's. I have shot them and never really liked the fit of them. I like the M1 way better. That being said I have a scar on my right hand from one Most of the time the thumb gets it with the stripper clips. But it decided it wanted my hand instead

I've never owned one of the pieces of crap but I have shot them and cleaned them, I also spent 8 years in the Infantry and know what hardware works. I am a Mini-14 " Basher " . Big piece of crap, I did actually think about picking a few up at the local pawn shops for 3-4 hundred bucks, then come the next assault rifle scare. I could screw some moron out of 750.00 to 1K  a piece, maybe more. I honestly think they should come with a clown suit, so a guy looks the part when holding it. It is what it is but the Mini-14 shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as a AR15. The Mini isn't even worthy of the AR's shadow.

Then again,  that's why there's horse races, if we were all betting on the only horse it would be much of a race, to each their own.

I appreciate the offer but I'll politely decline. Now that I know there are people out there will to trade a really nice bolt gun for a Mini 14, I'll take advantage of those less knowledgable folks to fill my gun safe, besides this is an older 180 series that looks like it just came out of the box, one owner gun with maybe 200 rounds thru it. I sold all the other POS Mini's I had over the years and have gone strictly to AR's and bolt guns that I can trust to the broad side of a barn from 100 yards.

  I have owned and shot 3 of them. cute little plinker, very reliable, throws brass about 20 feet. Tried several loads all shoot about the same 3-6 inch "patterns" at 100 yards, about 12-18 inch at 200. Fun to shoot but not accurate by any standard I use.
for the record I don't care for AR's either.
