im curious to know about the toutle rifle bull permit.  my dad drew that tag and we are both very excited.  sounds like lots of elk from what i have read, but finding one with much size is an issue...just from what posts have said.  scouting will tell.

My dad pulled this tag last season so I know this area pretty good. You most likely won't be able to get in by car in early season. But if you don't mind stretching the legs on a bike you can find some really good spots that hold elk all the time and no other hunter. You can access state land by car early season don't pass this area up, lots of land and good number of elk in the right spots but lots of recreation people also all the time.

As far a size goes there are lots of good average bulls. If you are talking trophy,I think there are better units. However, we had a few run ins with a nice old 6x6. I am not gonna say what I think he scored but he was def better than average, but he is mine :IBCOOL: sorry guys. Just think like a bull and there will be bulls there.
If you want to make it,
you can't fake it,
you gotta live it.

3000 line is a great place to start. castle lake area. Every time I have driven that way I have seen bulls on the road.

Here you go guys, a little bit of what you're going to be looking at. WF70 passed on a 5 point last year at 15 yards from this exact spot opening morning.

huntnphool,

My wife and I also drew the Toutle F tag.  That picture is awesome.  We live in the desert and can't wait to get back out in elk country.  This is my fourth year and my wife's first year bow hunting elk and would love any help you could offer. Thanks.

Thehunt,

We will probably go opening weekend and would be great to talk to you.  Always nice to have a little help, if you need, while in the woods.

Any chance of you two taking a day off during the week and going on a scouting trip, I think that would be the easiest way to orient you. I have offered to take one other guy, may as well make it a group that way you all could compare notes and help each other when your down there. GPS would be great too, this way you wouldnt take a wrong turn getting in there, and there are loads of them. Its about 30 miles in where that spot is and most of the way you cant see through the trees to get a bearing, GPS would be your best bet for the return trip.
