« on: December 16, 2011, 11:15:19 AM »
been looking for lightweight pants and jacket for spring and september hunts, plan to use different weight base layers to adjust for temp differences. been looking at the cabelas microtex and lite, sitka assault pants and 90% jacket, the kiui stuff, cant seem to find any wool products that are of a desireable cut and fit. anyone have any recommendations or experience? any i should check out?

All the ones you metioned are good options, I have used all except the KIUI. Part of it will depend on conditions, if your in the mountains all the time, in warmer hunts etc...For the money, the microtex is the best imo. I have a pair that is going into its sixth season of HARD use, still going strong. I prefer the regular to the lite because it has been more durable, and although a bit warm on those real hot days its very comfortable if it cools down the lite is the opposite. Its also very quiet. The sitka is great as well, and in certain situations is better than the MT.  Maybe a bit better fit (for me, try on before commiting.), and they are warmer and more weather resistant imo.

Take a look at First Light, as well.  They make wool clothes that look pretty good (although I've personally not used them.)

ive looked at the first light and they appear to be a generous cut thats has kind of a baggy fit to it, does that seem true or do i need to give it another look?

mostly looking for pants that can be worn with no base layer around 60-70 deg and add baselayer to compensate until i switch to late season insualated pants and a coat that can be worn arond 50deg.
most of the brands i list have somewhat close fitting athletic cut which is what m after. really want something that breathes and it would be nice if it would shed light rain and dew

If you are looking at the Sitka stuff - I would skip the ascent pants and buy the 90% instead.  They are much more versatile.

I have had Sitka and Kuiu. I love the Kuiu attack pants, they are the best I have owned. I actually sold all my sitka to purchase most of the Kuiu items.  The attack pants are heavier than the Sitka Ascent but lighter than the 90%. They have the athletic fit and breathe pretty well. I used them for early season elk hunting without a base layer and they worked great. I also used them in October for rifle deer with the Kuiu merino wool base layer and that also worked out well. I have a couple of the Guide jackets and they are very nice also and breathe well with the pit zips. Both the pants and the coat repel water pretty well but for a downpour you would need rain gear. I actually have an XL Kuiu guide jacket, a size L spindrift jacket and an Icon 6000 backpack for sale if you are interested.

I think all that you mentioned are great options, I gotta say though, I absolutely love my Under Armour stuff, especially the Ridge Reaper top and bottom. Might be worth looking at.

the under armour stuff ive looked at for the early season(lightweight) gear seems to be very softshelled without much dew or light rain repellancy. would you agree or maybe i need to check out a different gear model?

Have you looked at first lite?

i have they appeared to me to all be of a "baggy" cut and not really much of a close fitting athletic cut like im looking for?

My experience is your correct about the First Lite being a " baggy " or "loose" cut it is a great product quality wise and functions very well. The Microtex is going to fit very similarly... so if you were considering that in your original options it may be out.

My experience with the clothes and different designs and Im by no means an expert just my  :twocents:.  UA, Sitka, Kryptek etc.... design a more sport athletic type fit due to the materials they use having a "stretch" factor built in. So the designs can be form fitting but not restrictive. The MT, Firstlite etc... are cut more generously because the fabrics lack that built in stretch factor. So in order to achieve that freedom of movement they clothing design itself is more loose.

The upside to the looser cut styles is they generally work well with a base layer if that is what your looking at for when the weather cools.

Not sure which UA stuff you had looked at. The ridge reaper line looks pretty good. Definitley looks like it would fit well into the temp range you have outlined.

I used to wear Microtex on all of my early September Hunts.  It served its purpose and as others have said they are loose fitting.

This year I switched to the kryptek pants and they performed very well.  They are loaded with features (especially the removable knee pads which I though I would hate).  Plus they are more of an athletic cut.  I wore these pants from Spet 6 to the end of November.
