Just wondering if anybody hunts much around Crescent Bar for ducks. I finally got a boat out today for a test run and am looking to use it for the remainder of the season. It is my uncle's boat that he never uses so it is mine for the rest of the season. Any pointers on places to check out or would anyone that knows the area want to join me in the upcoming weekends? I will supply the boat, decoys etc.

Hunted that area many times. PM if you have specific questions.
#1 thing when hunting in that zone is that water level can fluctuate very rapidly and can leave your boat high and dry if you're not paying attention.

Just hunted it this weekend. Pretty slow, but enough action to keep it interesting. A change in the weather would help. The river was on the low side.

I grew up spending a lot of time on the river during the summer so I know how the water levels can change and will pay attention to it for sure. I took the boat out just to run it this morning and the water level was pretty low today.

I was a few miles south of there Saturday. Not too many mallards. Lots of action though!

No, none to speak of just singles and doubles. There were a few mixed in with the widgeon and divers, and some around the bar itself. There were some up high. It was a real mixed bag for us. My impression was the birds there have been there for awhile, nothing really new from up North.

yeaaa thats the same thing that has happen to us,all local birds,and divers.. seems like the farther south you go the better the hunting is

Headin down there tomorrow. Any updates on the river's action as of late? Setting up straight mallard dekes, but I'm hoping to catch a red-headed quacker.

Birds are still hitting the river pretty good. I will be heading that way Sunday so let me know how you do.

Talked to a guy yesterday when I was getting off the water who had been down there the day before (so that would be Tues). Said there were plenty of Widgeon, some Mallards-were very decoy shy.

I was there tuesday. Shot a few mallards and wigeon as well. Saw some bills but no reds or cans. It was pretty slow.

I'm fine with widgeon. Suppose to be a record year for them. I know that I got a few in Eburg at a spot where they are rare, so shooting a load of them wouldn't be out of the question.

No joke on the water levels. Treat it like the tide (only not on a predictable schedule).

I left my boat like this one night (note how low the water already is!), and woke up the next morning to find it high and dry!

The water level was wayyyy low. We weren't in a very sea-worthy vessel so our opportunities were limited.

We ended up putting a camo tarp down on the sandbank and putting a dark blanket over us and covering it with brush. It wasn't quite enough cover. Ended up getting 2 ducks, but couldn't really bring them in.

10's of thousands of divers and actually quite a few mallards. SAw some pintails and a lot of widgeon.

Sadly, I didn't see any red headed ducks

I have been scouting down there and seeing tons of birds, with some weather the hunting would be amazing.. but what do you do with this frickin' low water levels down there?! I mean I can drive my truck down the beach its so low.. hunt off a cliff!? its the only place to do it without laying on the dang rocks/dirt... the vegetation is 35-50 yards away from the edge of the water in most places. anyone know why this is?! my dad is a fisheries biologist for Chelan County PUD and he doesn't get why the water levels are so much lower in the Wanapum pool versus the Rock Island and Rocky Reach pools.. even the water levels at the Wells Pool are really low.. any one have much insight to why the Columbia is so stinkin' low right now!? it'd sure be nice if it would come back up soon!

I don't know why it's so low. My guess would be the lack of rain and low snow pack.

yeaaa thats the river for you, always leaving your boat high and dry, the best way to hunt it when its like that is layout blinds,ill be down there thursday morning..and if you wanna get out of the rocks hunt either the west bar or over by spanish castle
