I got the tag, 6yrs ago and can tell u a bit.  I talked with the biologist at the time and got a few solid tips.   Not to mention the gov tag at the time.

Congrats! It'll be interesting to see what you pull out of there. 11 years ago I worked all over that unit for Weyco..I was really surprised at the lack of big bulls... But I've heard its gotten better!

Go Scout! There are TONS of elk and TONS of honey holes!

Pulled that tag for m/loader last year.If a bull gets too far away or too deep in a hole.Go find another. Its not uncommon to see 30-40 branch bulls a day.

We some some pretty decent bulls while scouting before season. But very few real big ones.

One thing we noticed is that there are a ton of 4x4 and 5x5s.On the average or smallish side. That make a fair bull look pretty big. When hes with them.If you see what looks like a good 6x6 or better.I would probably take it.There are some bigger ones in there but they are few and far between.Body wise the the bulls we got last year were way bigger than the local bulls our family got.Probably by about 200 pounds.

We saw a lot of bulls last year that at first glance looked really nice. But on closer inspection were just decent bulls. It can really fool you up there when it comes to that.

Eyes in the Woods was able to work a deal with Weyco last year.So some gates were open for entry. And pretty unlimited access once you got in.

Just remember that a lot of the land around Fawn,Elk,and Hannaford lake got sold and is now private property.Have no idea what its going to do to access.

If you can get around to Minnie peaks there are some decent bulls in there but it'll be a bitch packin em out of that hole with the steep climb and trying to go over all the windfalls.

To us,just the experience of being around tons of bulls.Bugling their heads off.And being in an area that I grew up around and hauled logs out of after the mountain blew.Made it the best hunt weve ever had.It was definately awesome!

Good luck.You'll have fun.

I can't wait for this to start. My brain is on overdrive thinking about it. I love planning for hunts.
Is the Kid Valley Campground a good place to have a basecamp out of
What is the access like this time of the year
Do open roads to vehicles go thru the hunt area or is it a park at the edge of the unit and hike in type of hunt
Is it mostly Weyerhaeuser land
Thanks in advance for any advise given

Kid Valley Camp would be perfect.
Access now will be walk in only. But you can have a lot of fun walking in a few miles up on Marratta crk. You'll see a lot of bulls. When we were walking in,in Sept the bulls were going nuts.Better than any tv show I ever watched.Bulls bugling every direction possible!

If its like last year you can drive the whole thing.During season.

If you want to do a walk in for a part of a day sometime let me know.I would like to join you if schedules coincide.Maybe I could show you some good area.

We walked in a couple miles and watched the Schultz creek drainage. But also took a couple walks up around the ridge above Fawn lake. The Fawn lake trips were a lot of walkin. But it was worth it.

The Schultz creek,Marratta creek, walk was fairly easy.Mostly gravel or grass roads.Less than an hour in.Lots of great visibility no matter where you go.

Dont rule out the Ryan lake side either.Through Packwood, Randle area.
