Late Swakane deer tag
« on: July 15, 2008, 03:06:18 PM »
Just found out my brother-in-law and I drew the late tag.  If we get a little snow up high, this should be a great hunt.  The only problem is I've never hunted this area, I've hunted the Eniat area to the north but not the Swakane.  Any help would be appreciated.  Feel free to p.m. me.  I'll be doing some scouting so hopefully I'll have any area pinned down by November.

I also drew the Swakane late tag.  :IBCOOL: My dad drew it last year and my hunting partner drew it 2 years ago. A good way to get into the unit if you are coming from Hwy 2 is to take Nahahum canyon out of Cashmere. Also look for the access pionts up the Entiat river valley to Tyee ridge/mad river (be careful as this is also the boundary to the Chiwawa). Good luck scouting. I am luck enough to have grown up in the area and my hunting partner lives in the unit on Birch Mountain in Wenatchee.

Mills canyon.  Glass until your eyes bug then glass more.  You have a great tag, even better when it snows.  Scout to get familiar with the lay of the land and roads but do not expect to see many deer until late.

:yeah:Good advice. Mills canyon is the best way in. A spotting scope is VERY handy up there. And good quality binos.  My buddy and me had that tag in 2004, I shot a 4x4 the first day, he got a heavy 3x3 the next morning. The hunt gets better as the weather gets worse. Good luck! Here is a shot of my Swakane buck. (with a Montana whitetail)

That's a nice buck pictured above :hunter:, I am only holding off to better the 24" three point I got in SE Idaho a few years back.  I think those are reallistic expectations.(if the weather comes)

One of my buddies drew the tag last year and held out till the end. It paid off and he shot a dandy buck. I can't remember where he was at I'll talk to him this weekend and try to send you a pm. Good luck
