i came to a spot in the 505 this year last week or so and there was a spot with 5 elk heads laying there, 3 cows, 2 bulls racks cut off. i thought it was a little funny to see the cow heads there seeing as you have to have proof of sex. made me think something fishy was going on. who takes the baby making goods with them? i dont. you take the head right?
they call me the bloodhound cause i can track a wounded animal in the rain for 2 days when all it has is a splinter.. sniff sniff awooo

I could be wrong but you have to be able to prove the sex. so if it were a cow, I would think that you wouldnt need to take the head due to the tits

And with a bull, you only need the head if there is some sort of antler restriction, which of course in most cases in this state, there is. But if it's one of the "any bull" or "any elk" areas, a guy COULD leave a bull elk head in the woods, as long as there is evidence of sex attached to one of the quarters.

Or maybe they had been all processed and they threw the heads away.

thats a good point im from MO and the tags are antlered or antlerless and you have to keep the head attached but it is easyer to keep the head on a 150 lbs wt compered to a 800 lbs elk

I think if you have a good suspicion they were poached and you have the general idea of where they are than call the state and let them do their work maybe you could even meet  them up there and give a hand  :twocents:
