what quad do you have?
« on: December 23, 2011, 09:49:56 AM »
I'm looking at getting a used quad for hunting. Something quiet, 4 wheel drive, and gets around great. Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

FYI, you can't use ATV's for hunting in very many areas in Washington. I belong to a couple ATV clubs and we can hardly ride them in the woods. Private timber lands, State and DNR are the only ones off hand that I can think of where you can ride them if allowed. If you can, make sure they are registered with your ORV sticker on your quad and be sure to wear your helmet. Both are nice fines if you don't.

I bought a 2007 Honda Rancher in 07 when Honda came out with the 420cc fuel injected motor. I love it! It is a great quad, 4x4, goes where I want. I ride trails, push cows, haul deer, salt, hay etc... I love my Honda Rancher!

Got a Polaris Sportsman 500, 700, and 800. All great machines and will take you places you really shouldn't go... :twocents:

I have a 500 sportsman and its the biggest hunk of junk I have ever seen or been around! Was in the shop 4 times within the first 4 months of us buying it. Then 2 years ago it locked up in reverse and it has been nothing but a problem. One of these days I will get it fixed and get a better one! Probably a grizz or rhino.

Hmm...that's too bad. Between 3 guys we have 2 500s, 1 500 HO, 2 700s, and my 800 and none of us have had any problems. Well, one 500 HO didn't survive a head-on collision with a jeep... :chuckle:

Yeah it is, my buds run them and have not had any problem. I am done with them, they would not give me a new one. Mine did not even have 10 miles on it before it went to crap. It was still under factory warrenty so it was not a big deal. Time after time it still broke down. All within about a month! I talked to factory and they would not do anything other then say keep getting it fixed! I said what happens when the warrenty is gone. Well I found out! Never again

I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 700 EFI and love it. No problems at all. I would suggest EFI(electronic fuel injection) if your thinking of riding above 5000' elevation. I looked at the new sportsman and they look sweet. The power steering system they are using now sounds good. I wish mine had power steering. When you get some gear and winch on the front, it makes it a little tougher to steer at slow speeds.

Go with Can-am.  A little more money, but you get what you pay for.  I"ve had 5 now and had great luck with all of them.  And you can ride them anywhere you want on federal land, which is all USFS land except on the main roads.  They are legal on all federal land, offroad.

Arctic Cat 500.. and you can haul 500lbs easy too!! Notice those other brands only can haul a small deer or a just the head of a elk. .

Honestly this 4 wheeler is awesome more ground clearance then the other brands and I've never had a problem with it in 4000miles in 5 years so far. Love it.

I know you've said that on here many times. Still not sure I believe it, but if it is true, is a helmet required?

I have the Honda Foreman.  It will go anywhere, and it will easily pull a ton of hay.  I use mine all the time on a small farm plus getting up logging roads.

You do need a helmet, it's a $124 ticket if I remember correctly. Besides, you're an idiot if you don't wear one. I learned the hard way. I guess that's why I'm crazy............

I know you need a helmet if you're riding on roads that are legal for ATV's and designated ATV trails. I just wondered if it was still required for just going cross country. Personally, I will not wear a helmet while riding a 4 wheeler. And that's why I sold mine.

Have had Yamahas all my life and will probably never change...that said make sure you get a machine that is EFI... with the shotty gas now days its eating up carbuerators like no tomorrow.
I would suggest something in the 450 cc they are small enough to maneuver around and have plenty of power. I have a 600 Grizzly but find myself riding the wifes new 450 more often. Just my  :twocents:

I would caution, while I can't speak for all forests, I do know that the forests where I operate have restricted ATV usage to designated roads and trails. I think the best advice is to call your local ranger station before riding. :twocents:

naches sportsman, you better give the naches ranger district a call.  ATV's ARE legal OFFROAD anywhere you want to go as long as you are not doing "resource damage".  And as far as "who to look out for this summer", good luck.  I've put 20,000mi on my atv's in the last 5 years and have seen maybe 10 people in that time.

I just went thru what you are looking at.  Looked for a good used one for over a year (really wasnt in any hurry)-it's kind of like asking what's the best 4 x4 truck to buy-everyone has a "must have" or a "don't buy".  I kind of decided to just look for a good deal on one  and found a very good used Big Bear 400, havent ridden it much yet but sure seems like a good machine and I think I got a good buy on it.  I'd advise being carful when you look (there's one full time scammer on Craigs List that runs really cheap ad's daily and is actually pretty easy to spot) but I'm told there are lots out there that are stolen out of state and offered in other states at a good price-would adivse a title check before buying.  I did a lot of comparisons on line and all that did was confuse me more, but I was looking for ground clearance and wieght capacity which the Big Bear seemed to be fairly good at and most of the owner reviews on it were very good. They seem to hold their value very well and I know there are some great deals with very low finacning on new ones right now, so you might consider that option also.  Good luck on your search!!!!

I have a Yamaha Grizzly 450 and love it.  The only problem I have had is when the freakin mice entered through the muffler and shoved the engine full of dog food.  Took it down to the shop and they had to take the engine apart and pull out all the rotten dog food and ground up mice and they mouse proofed it for free.   Other than that I have not had a single issue with my grizzly and it runs like a champ!

I have a 2001 Grizz 600 and a 2001 Kodiak 450, both were bought brand new. I have hauled out 10 + moose, a few elk. I have taken them in the back country for sheep. I flipped the 600 over in the TOK river and caught up with it 400 yards down stream. I have never had any issues with them what so ever other than batteries and brakes.

I will tell you one thing if I had to do it all over again would have a pair of the 450's. The 600 is heavy, around most of the places that are hard packed or roads no issues. You get it in the mud and that extra 150 pounds will go deeper. More than once I have been stuck and the wife just drives around me and hooks up and pulls me out. Just something you should think about.

The 450 will carry a ton of weight also, good luck on what ever you buy.....

I have a polars sportsman 350. I use it around my place and for plowing snow. I don't take it hunting because it is NOT legal off road in the Umatilla national forest. I have fun taking pictures and turning in the guys riding off road. I turned in so many guys last year that the ranger just gave me his cell number.

How well do your quads do on the mountain roads with snow on the ground?

My sportsman 700 has done great in the snow and all terrains. I have noticed how several have posted about liking the lighter and smaller ATV's. I would agree but this is another reason if I were to buy a larger atv, I would want power steering. From what I am hearing it makes a world of difference.

Polaris is made in USA.

Good luck!

I have a 2005 Yamaha Bruin 350, my dad has the 05 Yamaha Kodiak 450 and my brother also has a Bruin.  They are all good machines and have never let us down, even under extreme amounts of stress. (Two deer and two hunters on my 350)  I think any quad purchased now days is going to be the same outcome however, but I recommend Yamaha.
I've spent most of my life hunting and fishing....the rest has been wasted
