325 YRDS with a muzzy ...

I am a new guy on the block and I was watching a show this morning where a hunter pulled a shot with a 50cal muzzleloader at 325 yrds ...WOW. dropped it ....crazy ..ANYONE PULL A SHOT LIKE THAT ON HERE ? I may need to buy one if they shoot like that ...

Is is possible...probably.
Can modern smokepoles do it.....probably.
Can bows shoot 100 yards.....yep.
Can rifles shoot 100o yards.....yep.

Can hunters make shots on game at those ranges........sure.

Every time......nah.....probably not.

Should the average joe try it......i'd say defenitely not.

Also...remember......its a SHOW...........how many shots did it take? Did the animal really drop or did they cut the scene and chase it down and shoot it again?

Not enough energy at 325 to even penetrate a hide is my bet.  Darn bullet would be dropping at such a great rate I bet it would bounce right off.

No I am not making that shot on animals with my equipment, but I do shoot 225 all the time with open sites and 4" groups penetrating a 4x4 backstop into sand we built. If you think at 325 it's goig to be bouncing off skin you are highy mistaken.

Some of these newer front stuffers used in other states with scopes will shoot right along with modern rifles.

I looked at some ballistic tables and newer muzzies can keep a 200 gr bullet at around 1650 fps (and they weren't at max charge).  That's better momentum than most factory .243 or 7mm-08 provide.  Those two will bounce off before a muzzy will.

You naysayers are awesome. If you were to dig up a thread I started on the campfire you will see some of the rigs Dan shoots. I am willing to bet he can out shoot more than half of us at 300-600 yards with an open sighted muzzleloader. Playing the tof is a tough one, but accuracy is not the issue. As for retained energy/velocity I would not worry as you will never shoot that far on purpose.

I will say that I'm sure to the OP that  was with a scoped 209 gun.
Here is a whitetail buck I took this year in Ohio W/ my "scoped 209 CVA Optima" during the modern season. (Shotgun,MLer's and straight walled pistol only)

Shot this buck at 254 yards and used the 250g TEZ. 1 shot drop

shot 2 does as well. 1@ 182 yards and 1@ 145 yards...both of these the bullet passed through....

So yea it can be done!
I myself without a scope wouldn't take more then a 100-125 yard shot with my Wa. gun(T/C BlackDiamond XR) and like the ML Reg's here in Wa.

If all of this is true, what's the point of muzzy season?  Might as well spilit it in two and give the archers and mod guys each a couple more weeks each year.

A muzzleloader has plenty of killing power at those ranges. I have seen critters shot well past that as well. Most people should not shoot that far but just like with rifle and bow. Some can do well at those ranges. Do you take a lot more risk at losing a animal on a bad shot? Sure its a given when you start shooting at any extended ranges.

Bounce off?? Hopefully that was just a figure of speech, that weapon is more than capable of dropping an animal in its tracks at that range, the only problem is most of the time the hunter is not.

I will be building an Allen boxlock later this year. The guys who build super accurate stuffers tend to like underhammer guns, but they are pretty impractical for hunting. You don't need 209's for accurate rifles.

well ya know ...all the old timers maybe need to realize that new technology is come your way fast .. with the muzzys being able to shoot a jacket bullet now days its like given them a rifle ...and they do now drop some game !
