2 years no success...
« on: December 23, 2011, 08:31:46 PM »
So this year will be Cody's 3rd year turkey hunting. First year he had chances, he took 4 shots, but no dice. My fault, i am no turkey hunter and i didn't set him up for success. 2011 no dice again. He didn't even get to pull the trigger.
Again i am a at fault for denying my son the tools he needed to be successful. SO this year i am starting early. We tried the dayton area the last 2 years with no luck, sure we saw turkeys, but if we wern't on private property we wouldn't have been close.

Might look at a guided hunt in the spokane area.

Anybody have any ideas???

Thank you,
Chris

Yeah i can call. We have hunted the youth season.

Cody is 12. He has alot of years of good hunting ahead of him. I feel bad for him cause i am not much of a turkey hunter. But that is what he really wants to hunt so i am trying to learn as much as i can.

Last year youth hunt was tough.  I sat with my son for 3 days in a blind in the rain trying to get birds to respond to calls, not.  Good time with my son but turkeys were difficult.

My buddy owns Okanogan valley guide service and they do well.  I know turkeyslayer on here does very well for turkeys too.  Not sure how close to Spokane they hunt, but im guessing a couple hours out of town. To me the going price for a guided turkey hunt is a tough pill to swallow

Well we are from vancouver, and for the last 2 years we have driven to the blues. So i am not stuck on spokane, just figured we had a better chance due to the number of birds.
I really just want to see Cody get a bird.

Call me crazy, but if you live in Vancouver...
I would start scouting now close to home, locate a flock of easterns, get to know them, and nail one during the youth weekend.
For some reason, the ones I chase dissapear about the 10th, but are real vocal until then (mid march-early April)
I do not call until season, but hear them "sound off" on their own...  :twocents:

The only birds i have seen around here have been in willard. I hunt the coweeman and ryderwood and i have never seen a bird up there. Probably looking for elk and deer when i should be looking for birds.

there is a flock that likes to hang out near a well known fishing spot on the Cowlitz ( ;) )
What I have learned about finding easterns, if we get a light dusting of snow, GET OUT LOOKING !!
you will be surprised at the amount of track in an area that you had no idea there were any around.  :twocents:

I would love to take you and your son out.  I have some great areas near Springdale that would be perfect for a father & son weekend.  Let me know if you're interested.

Hey WDFW, that is a very generous offer by Machias!  Fred took my son and I out on our first year and the experience was invaluable.  I still think about that trip everytime I go turkey hunting with my kids and am grateful that he was so generous with his time for us.

Nice offer from Machias.....great to see folks here willing to help youngsters out.  Turkey hunting is all about understanding how to hunt them, then it gets easier.  Great opportunity for you and your son to get some out in the field classroom experience.

Good luck....oh, and we'll need pictures.

Nice we are talking about turkeys already. I hope to be in Northern Spokane for the opener. I've bagged a few, but still have some learning do. Some great offers for the young hunters

I keep coming back to this,  :chuckle:
When I first started Turkey hunting in the early '90's, I spent 3 years looking for Birds in SW Washington, saw 1 in PeEll (near), saw a couple in the Vinyard on at Skookumchuck, and covered from Menlo, to the Bald Hills, and Capitol forest. only 3 turkeys, and some feathers out by Lincoln Creek.
Then took a trip to Kettle Falls, saw 12 b4 I even got to camp, had a flock of Hens outside the tent in the morning, found Turkeys everywhere, but 4 years to get a Turkey.
Did not hunt for several years for them because I could not get $$ or time off in the spring to travel east.
Now, I hunt near home for these damn Easterns, and finding them scattered around in the same areas I looked before, but after 4 years, have yet to find one during season I can get an arrow in, and am still planning on getting an Eastern before I go try for an "easy one" lol
If you have only tried for 2 years, dont get discouraged, I have only eaten one Turkey in 9+ years of hunting them.
But like the Seahawks, gonna do it next season ~!!!

I have seen quite a few in the yale unit years back when I used to hunt there. Klickitat is a bit closer with alot of birds there. In the last 2 years I've only hunted a few times. I spend most of the opening weekend at the 3D shoot. When I do get out, I mostly walk around hen clucking looking for sheds :chuckle:. But have seen lots of birds there.
