Bulk 40S&W ammunition
« on: December 27, 2011, 02:36:54 PM »
For Christmas I was lucky enough to get a Smith and Wesson M&P in the 40S&W. This being my first handgun ive never really searched for a good price for ammo. Im looking just for target rounds and im willing to buy in bulk for a better price. Does anyone know a cheap place to order some or pick some up at. The best ive found online is about $240 after tax and shipping for 1000 and those were for reloads. Thanks in advance.

Gotta check the usual circuit of online vendors. If you want a local pickup surplus ammo and arms in lakewood area has good prices on bvac. I think it was 120 for 500 last time I picked some up. It's reloaded tho if that bugs ya.

Buy Mart is pretty darn cheap with the 250 pack of UMC ammo.  You used to be able to find factory reloads at the puyallup gun show.  I always shot them in my 45 and the price was amazing.  I haven't been in a couple years beings that I moved to the East Side of the state.

I've never seen walmart sell at bulk cheap though.

To the OP I would say that the 240 you found is about as low as you will be able to find. Just make sure you are comfortable dealing with the ammo manufacturer if they somehow let a 10 mm load get into a .40 case. Better yet get firsthand recommendations.

The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Thanks everyone. I have looked at reloading because i do that for everything else (all my rifles and shotgun) but it just doesnt seem like it would be a savings to reload cheap target rounds for handguns. If i ever got into competition or shooting for accuracy i would do it for sure though.

The last time I saw ammo prices at walmart it was around $14 a box for .40.  It's not cheaper than what was originally posted in this post but it's still cheaper than a lot of places.  And the fact that it's easily available.  Also when buying in bulk shipping becomes a factor.  Shipping on 1000 rounds is going to bump up the per box cost of that ammo.   :twocents:

The price the op quoted included shipping. A lot of ammo dropship sites offer shipping inexpensive enough to remain competitive.

With the right powder choice, you should be able to reload target load 40 for much less of what you can buying it retail.

1000rnds of range pickup or once fired brass will run you $35, but remember that you can reload that more than 10 times.

A pound of powder is ~$22.00.. That gets you more than 1,200 loads.

1000 bullets ~$100  ( http://www.berrysmfg.com/product-i14494-c14-g8-b0-p0-.40_Cal_135gr_RS.aspx  )  Cheaper if you go with lead.  (Not through a Glock!)

1000 small pistol primers ~35.00

http://www.handloads.com/calc/loadingCosts.asp

It is cheaper to reload what you want instead of buying bulk in most cases.  (You said target loads. What is referenced above is not target quality or lighter than defensive cartridges) If you have the equipment, reload for your 40. Keep an eye on SeattleGuns.net or THR.org to see bulk stuff listed by private parties for much cheaper than retail. Buy locally and pay tax instead of 40 pounds of shipping weight and the HazMat fee...

Contact Hight Mountain Hunting Supply in Moses Lake or Wenatchee. They have bulk 40 ammo from Bitterroot Valley. Sorry I cant remember the price of the 40's, but they have a stack of it in Moses Lake store.
