Late Muzzy Buck - Late Story
« on: December 27, 2011, 10:15:15 PM »
Went on a november muzzy hunt with my father-in-law 382 unit. He actually went out before the season and sighted in his muzzy this year. thats always a plus. Started down the drainage in perfect clear weather with maybe 2-3 inches of fresh snow. He had determined to shoot first legal buck since he has been holding out for a big one last 3-4 years with no luck. Still hunting through the oaks we see a doe bedded down 220 yds away so we pause and look for awhile. No other deer but with one deer good chance of some more so I wait while he tries to sneak closer. He goes 75 yards and up she goes all by herself and so he comes back and were standing there talking when out comes a doe from the same oaks as the first doe. right behind the doe is this nice little three point with what at first looked like matching eyegaurds. Buck comes out and stops right on the edge of the oaks staring right at us. My father-in-law takes the shot straight on and the buck takes off through the oaks. Check the spot ,big clump of hair and 30 yards away a good spot of blood.

So we know the buck is hit...hard to tell how good it was a 90 yard shot. So we wait for a awhile and start trailing the buck and down the trail not more then 200 yards we jump the buck, but the oaks are so thick cant get a shot. so i stay on the trail and my father goes down the canyon aways and I wait and start pushing towards him. Takes a few times and about a mile of tracking but eventually I push the buck out across the canyon and my father in law hits him at 160 yards.walkie talkies or cell phones would have been nice but we did it with nothing and it worked out. Turns out the 1st shot straight on went between the shoulder and the ribcage no bone no vitals. Just glad we were able to track the buck down not leave him wounded in the field. Made for a pretty good adventure and the the little 3 and half inch cheater/almost droptine was unique.

So the coolest part was my father in law and me together with me taking a buck in september on a early season hunt. and finishing it off with my father taking down one in the late season. both over the counter tags and both public land. No monster bucks...but maybe some day. :IBCOOL:

It was a successful year..best I have had, killed a high country buck, helped my sister get a buck, watched my brother miss a buck, had my nephew miss a buck. Killed a coyote and a bobcat and was there with Rick to get this buck. Hopefully get to have a few more years like that!
