AK bear
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:50:29 AM »
A buddy in AK called and wants to do a bear hunt this Spring on POW island. Last year for OTC non res tags to my understanding.

What is the best mode of travel for an AK  game hunt? In the past I have flown to AK before but increasing air fair rates, shipping back considering taking my truck up on the ferry. Any issues time wise getting back hide and meat on the ferry?

Maybe better to drive up?

Suggestions welcome

A drive to Hanies and catch the ferry down is one way, but ferrying up from here..$$$$  I know there is a place to rent atv's in Juneau and ride onto the ferry from there and utilize them as transportation around the Island.  Forget the town there, but maybe a call to them and see if there is a way to rent a island truck once you arrive.  Always could hire a boat for beach hunting also...

Or just forget about it and I'll go instead cause you aren't going to shoot one anyway....just kidding, with all the money you make, you could just buy the island and hunt it all you want.  Sounds like a fun hunt.

Check out alaska marine ferry info online.  You can see how much it cost from Bellingham of possibly Prince Rupert B.C.  Driving to haines would be a long ways out of the way.  Research renting a forest service cabin on an out of the way place on the island.  Maybe a small boat rental, you can cover alot of beach with one.  There are some rental / lodge type places that have a vehicle for you to use/ rent while you are there.   You can use airlines to get to Ketchikan then either ferry ot fly over to the island.
