Late cow down
« on: December 31, 2011, 03:18:30 AM »
So I will post pictures here later.  I just got home from hanging meat.  Was the only weekend I could go out for my late muzzle loader cow tag.  Walked around all morning with nothing seen but a cow moose.  Recieved a tip from a couple of good guys about a herd that they had seen earlier in the morning.  Went to where they were last seen.  After a long hike in the snow I found where they were.  Lots of fresh tracks.  Followed the tracks for a half mile or so and about 75-100 yards away I see elk across a draw.  I made sure it was a cow and plopped my butt down to shoot.  After the shot I watched and waited.  Only to see the cow still standing in the same place without being phazed.  Wasn't even looking around, just kept feeding.  WTH?!?  Reload, and shes behind some brush.  Wait, out she walks on the other side of the brush.  Hold behind shoulder and bang.  Watching, and again she acts like nothing happened.  Now I'm pissed. Started wondering if its my sights being off, is it just my nerves?  Leaning towards nerves still.  Reload again and take a few minutes to calm myself while they are in some brush.  As soon as she stepped in the clear I pulled the trigger.  My first thought was, hey at least they ran off this time.  Only ran 10 yards and dropped.

I thought the same!  It would have been nice if my old man could have made it over to hunt with me.  There were about 8 of them and he has a cow tag he hasnt filled

Congrats! Sounds like you put the hammer down on the last shot. Where did you hit her?

Why can't I ever find elk like that.  I have to hide in the trees to shoot most of mine.  Nice job where are the pictures.

Good job ...this happened to me once.. I was hunting up off Elk hts r.d and shot a cow 3 times with a 50 gal believe it or not but my 3rd shot she stood there eating leaves off the trees .. I was like WTH TOO !! I pull up one more time lay the sight behind the shoulder squeeze the trigger ..boooooom smoke clears and she is still standing there.. Now I only had three quick loads on me ,,, Now what ? I stand there for a minute pi$$ed off and then she turns to leave and flips over backwards....HUH  :dunno: :yike: I run down to her and all 3 shots nailed her ..all in a 10 in.ircle right in the boiler room ....Have the balls somewhere... that was crazy ...now I have a 54.gal and they go nowhere :yeah:

The last one hit right at the back of the shoulder on the near side.  She was slightly quartering toawrds me, found the bullet under the skin on the other side about 6 inches back from the entrance.  Nice to not have to trail it.  Still sore this morning though.  There was a small patch of hair missing on her belly as well.  Kinda wondering if maybe thats where one of my shots went.  Who knows.  All I knew was that I had to make the last shot count because I had already used up my 2 speedloaders at that point.
