Need info on Tucannon unit
« on: July 18, 2008, 08:36:50 AM »
I drew one of the trophy elk tags for Tucannon during archery.  I've never been down there.  Any suggestions on the best place to
look for big bulls?  Any help would be great.

thanks

That unit definately isnt a trophy unit ;), should have put in for Margret or Toutle, much better trophy quality. ;)

I know a little. Why don't you introduce yourself and start getting involved in some of the conversations on here. I PM'd someone with 1 post with info a while ago and never heard back or even saw them on here again. Give a little to get a little. Oh Welcome!

Not a trophy unit???? Margret and Toutle are great, but there are 400 class Rocky mountain bulls in the Tucannon.

(oh, I just saw the little smiley face deals, you were joking)

Me, Eastern WA hunter, mostly whitetail.  Very little elk hunting under my belt.  Lots of trips to Wyoming for deer and antelope.
Spot and stalk, no bait, no guides.

Big farm?  are you talking about the farm land above and west the trout hatchery?

One more question, would the opening week sept 8, or the last week of archery season be best as far as
the rut?

WHen you draw a BLues big bull tag you plan to hunt the whole season and if you score early you go home early. You have a great tag! I had a Blues tag last year and a guy told me if you can't hunt the whole season ,center your hunt on the 15th of Sept. Make the most of it as you won't probably get one again soon. I don't know the Tucannon so can't help there but the state bios are real helpful if you haven't tried them yet just have your maps when you call. nwhunter

It won't be hard to get into elk there, the hard part will be getting close enough with a bow.  I watch them bugle in the blues as early as labor day like the other guys said I would plan to be there the whole season, I mean seriously it's a blue mountains bull tag for crap sake you gotta go balls out.

close but not close enough.

lots of big bulls down there. you have a tag that deserves as much time as you can possibly give it. lots of nice elk country since the big fire. go south, and make sure you have some legs under you!! that is steep country.

I agree with PascoKid...It seems that the rut peaks the latter half of the archery permit.  The muzzloader permit is perfect.  I actually have seen 350" to-over 400" bulls in the drainage.  There were lots of 300-340" bulls last year in this unit... so its what you make it.

Thanks for all of the info everybody.  I know, I should be there both weeks, but I also have three tags to fill
in Wyoming in September....and a job....and a wife.   I am not going home until my tag is filled though!

You need the wife and job...Wyoming?...That seems to be important...but the odds of you ever drawing a tucannon bull Permit again vs..tags in Wyoming?  I wish I had your problem...lol.  Its worth the time you spend...but don't set expectation high if you don't have the time...there is also luck....right place right time.  good luck too you.
