Index area
« on: January 17, 2012, 01:01:56 PM »
Hey so I just found out my family has property off hwy 2 near Index, I was just wondering what the deer prospects were up there. It seems to straddle 2 GMUs, anyone have any info about the REGION? Not specific spots, just general information if anyone has done allright with deer or even grouse, Thanks

Are you talking around the town of Index? Kind of limited up past the town with the North Fork Washed out. You might look at hunting on the road that goes up to Lake Cavanaugh. Will be lots of motorcycles in the Reiter Pit area when it opens up.

I haven't been out there in a couple years so I don't know if there have been any major changes, but when I used to frequent the area, it wasn't uncommon to see deer, bear and grouse.  Frequent washouts occur in the area, so you might wanna bring a mountain bike.

Do a search on here, it seems to me that a couple members hunted the wilderness area up near Index and bagged a really nice BT during the rut with modern in late Oct.

Your in the shadow of Mt. Index then. Not alot of deer on that area of the south side of the river. You could probably pick up a few grouse. Look at the North side of Highway 2

Unless they fixed up the road by now ,you won't be able access it through there   :dunno:.When I was there last time (October) the road wasn't fixed and was blocked off bout 6 miles from HWY 2 (I'm talking about the road along the river which leads to the wilderness area ) and only for local traffic .Otherwise the BT are elusive creatures  :chuckle:

That is by the Wild Sky Wilderness which is not a high hunt area.
