Ever seen this? Dog issue.

So, I am having the neighboor go over and check while Im at work... I imagine all will be ok, but am awaiting her report.

This morn I fed the dogs (my old mutt and my year old Springer)... just before I left for work, I gave the pup a pet and noticed that his lips were all swollen up and a lil bit around his eyes.. there are no bugs out, or at least, I dont think so. He was in good spirits. This morning, I cooked up some elk/pork sausage and put some water in with the drippings and put it on their food. The thing is, this was a maple sausage and while making this sausage about a year ago, when we'd mix in this commercial packet of maple seasoning, it made my buddy and I cough up a storm, dam near as bad as being sprayed by pepper spray!! Kinda makes a guy wonder why he'd eat it, but dang...its yummy. I just wonder of some ingredient in there, some nitrate/nitrite or something, is what caused this allergic reaction. I'm really hoping the neighboor doesn't call and say he over there stone dead... getting a little anxious actually and will call her and tell her to expedite this inspection...asap... its only been 2 hours since I left the house...I think it'll be ok.

Sounds alergic or a bite.  Spider bite maybe?

I have had this happen several times mostly in the winter. My hunting dogs see a spider scurry across the carpet and they are all over it. Several times the result is one of them ends up with swollen lips or a swollen face. Call a vet and ask about dosage for benadryl and the face should be fine in a day or two. I have never seen dogs react to nitrates or nitrites, and if you are not giving them the powder there should be no short term health issues. (Keep in mind I am not a vet!)

Never seen it happen to a dog, but when I was in my teens our family tried a sausage mix from a different company than we were used to.  My Dad had a bad reaction to it just while mixing it into the raw deer meat.  Both his arms developed hives all the way to the elbows, and his fingers swelled so much he couldn't make a fist.  We never even tried to eat it, just threw it all away.  Sounds like the dog may have been sensitive to one of the spices or maybe the cure in the mix.

Problem is benadryl was recalled and is nearly impossible to find right now. Have to look hard for store brands but, I looked a few weeks back for a new bottle and couldn't find anything- totally sold out?

I remember there was a topic on here sometime back that a certain artificial sweetener is toxic to all canines. I would be very careful about feeding prepared human foods.

That is wierd. It does sound allergic. If you can get ahold of your buddy, see if he can give him a 25mg benadryl.

Thats odd, I hadn't heard about that. Most folks have some in the medicine cabinent.

Active ingredient is diphenhydramine you could look of products with that on the active ingredient list.

That's because the end times are coming and benadryl is one of those easy to find OTC meds that people can stockpile.  The Gov't "Recalled" it (i.e. bought it all up) If you can't stockpile it before the end times come, you'll have to turn to the Gov't to get it.

Neighboor is on his way there right now, I should hear in just a few minutes how he's doing. Ok, she just called and he's not swollen or anything that she notices and is still in good spirits, so I am going to assume he'll be ok. Maybe he did find a spider in the house or something this morning or last night???

When we went to mix this sausage last year, my buddy warned me that it would make us cough and I was like, "yeah, whatever, lets keep moving here"... it was crazy as hell... he opened this package and poured it on this meat and I was probably 6 feet away and within seconds he and I were coughing uncontrollable!! We used 3 different spice packets that night and this was the only one that got us. Stuff is yummy as hell though!!!

That maple sausage spice definitely has an artificial sweetener... I bet that could be it.

I think all tylenol made at the same plant was recalled as well. Something about mold is what I recall someone saying. BTW, I think 25mg is the OTC size of all Benedryl.

Also, a good one to note, benedryl is also good to give your dogs if they get traveling, separation, crowd or any type of situational anxiety. Pretty much the same warning for humans, sleepyness, drosiness etc. Just works a little better on dogs for that use.

Hey Mike, is an aspirin a day ok for an old dog to ease joint pain and such? I was wanting to get him on remedyl, but wasn't super happy about the cost. Any other easy options that are safe and will help him for another year or so until something gives out?

baby aspirin from Costco is the cheapest. Rimadyl is hard on dogs too- last ditch effort type stuff. Works good but, they can only take a couple years of getting it often.

Thanks guys. He's likely only got a year or so left, but hard to tell. He'll be 14 on Valentines day. Getting real weak... and very obviously stiff and uncomfortable when laying down and getting up...

sucks- Rimadyl works very well and might be worth the cost to make his last days comfortable. That drug is hard on dogs' systems and shouldn't be used long term but, sounds like for your boy it would make winter months easier.

I agree Bear. No need to feed them prepared food. And we really shouldn't be eating all that processed crap either!!

The Ding Dong....aka Gunner, is doing great now, matter fact, he took a swim amongst incebergs in the river today, but after that day he seemed to drool a little more than normal that evening. All seems fine now. Interesting, that is for sure. If I get a chance, I'll be taking a look at that maple sausage seasoning and seeing whats in there!
