Wow!! I just read something about those in the Seattle Times Sunday auto section a few months back!!! Jeeze I can't remember what all was said about them but it wasn't good. My '06, 4.6 wasn't included in it, good thing. Sounded like it's a real b**ch to do without breaking them. Wish I could help ya more.

Is a huge pain, books at over 2 hrs. and yes they do break, in fact Ford makes a "special tool" to remove them after they break.

Yes it is a big deal. I am having mine done at the stealership. They said they do more than anyone on the west coast and only one time had to take engine apart. They want 450.00 which includes 2 broken removals and then 1/2 hr. for each additional one. I am anticipating 8 broken was wondering what other people experienced. Yes the 4.6 is not involved only the 5.4. I guess Ford did have a better Idea to get you to spend a lot of money.

I had one done a couple of years ago, and I think two plugs broke.

They probably went to far in trying to fix the spark plug blowout problems with the previous 5.4 heads. If you google it, you'll find that the earlier 5.4s had a habit of spitting out plugs, along with the threads.

Ironic that this came up, day before yesterday i pulled out of the drive way and gave my 01 f250 with the V10 a little gas and bang, scared the crap out of me. The loudest noise i ever heard. come to find out I blew the #5 plug right out.  The guy at The stealership said it was common with the V10 and the 5.4 motors.  I have 130k on mine and he was suprised that it didn't happen sooner.  Unfortunataly for me they couldnt repair it and I ended up having to get a new head.  :bash:

Piss poor design. I knew about the problem when I bought mine used from a Chevy dealer. I talked the dealer into changing the Plugs before I would purchase the truck. The dealer wasn't aware of the problem and agreed to change them. I guess they only broke one plug. Mine were done at 87k.

I guess if you take them out early, like 30,000 or less and replace them, it is not "such" a biotch. Get them out before they get extreamly carboned up in the threads.

My dad had his done last year and I want to say it was around $600 due to the difficulty of having them removed. This was at the dealer down by Boeing Field...the name skips my brain right now.

My brother has an 02 and his spark plugs stripped the holes. The shop he took it to bought a specialty tool from ford so they could fix it. What a pain.

That sounds like the F150 spark plug blowout problem, which was before the problem of plugs breaking off. Plugs pulled the threads right out of the head.

I got mine changed at Titus-Will ford in Tacoma, I think it was 450 plus the plugs. Had probably 95k on them and they got them all out without no breakage. I was holding my breath. Now I am holding my breath because since they did it I smell gas in the cab. It did that a long time ago and it was a couple sticking injectors. It was another bad ford design. The good thing is they did extend the warranty on the injectors to 100k if that is it.

I got lucky   :sas: on my 05, at 65,000 miles one of the plugs melted and went into my block. So I never had to change them, I just went ahead and bout a new motor for 7,000.00   Never been so pissed in my life... Warranty expired 30 days prior...

Still love me some FORD.....

the new fords don't blow the plugs out . the deep tip design carbons in the head bellow the threads . if you carbon flush the night before and change them on a cold engine . they   take about two hours  to change. If one breaks lisle makes a tool that works well to remove the broken plug twenty to thirty minutes a hole.
