New Davis wall tent coming my way!
« on: January 07, 2012, 09:33:27 PM »
Last year my Cousin and I looked at all the tent manufactures at the Sportsman show in Portland, we both really liked the Davis tents so my Cousin ordered his 15x18 right away. I decided a month ago that I really liked my cousins Davis tent and it was time I stepped up to a nice white wall tent. To do this I needed to sell my 16x16 Army tent, so I put my Army tent on Craigslist and sold it a couple weeks ago for $400.
So this morning I ordered a new Tent from Roy at Davis Tent :IBCOOL:
I went with a 16x20, added a window to the back wall, two stove jacks (I couldn't decide where I wanted the stove so I just went with two stove jacks), added a screen door and also added the Colorado door to the front in case the zipper fails. He gave me a $100 discount and free shipping since i'll pick it up at the Sportsmans show next month.

Sounds like a great setup.  Did you order a frame too?  If not, buy the angles and build the frame from conduit.

Have fun with your new toy.

I'm going to miss the old setup, mainly because I was never worried about someone stealing it while it was in the
the mountains for 3 weeks straight every year. But now I'll save money in propane.

Picked up my new tent tonight at the PNW Sportsman show :IBCOOL: can't wait for nicer weather to get hear so I can set it up. And while I was waiting for my tent I ran into Elksnout, we were both getting tents  from Davis.

how did you know which angles to get?  my angles are wrong for my tent, cause the fly is open by 2 feet.  confused in othello.  mike w

The company should tell you which angles you need.  Mine are 120 degree angles(wilderness tent from the wall tent shop), and I think most are.   Call them and ask.   Did you measure your tent before cutting the frame?  Tents vary in sizes and the angles need to be taken in to consideration when cutting the frame to length.

Miles already touched on it, but my first thought after reading your post was that your rafter pipes are cut to long.  What kind of tent do you have, and where did you get the frame joints?  How do you know the angle of the joints is correct?

:tup:on your tent. I bought a 10'x12' Davis tent 10 years ago and it never leaks. Love the tent. I made two 10'- 2x3 knot free fir for A frames ,10- 5' -1x2 knot free fir for the side walls, and a 15' 3 peice 2" galv. pole for the ridge. It holds up the the rain ,snow ,and wind just fine. Your going to have many many years with it. I was thinking of adding anther tent for cooking and one for sleeping.

There is a diagram on www.walltentshop.com that might help you when measuring and cutting your frame.

Here is the direct link to the instructions:

This is true, when I started getting serious about buying a tent I procrastinated a bit and Roy said nows a great time to get one before their prices go up due to the increase in cotton prices.

Paid $901 for my Davis Tent, stove w/ all ecessories, and angle kit.... All came from Davis.... The poles cost me another $40 I couldn't touch the same size set up from Rainer for under $1300....

i think i got my angles from the moscow place.  it is not their fault they dont fit cause i measured the tent and cut all the poles.   the tent works good .  i cover it with a big tarp to help with warmth and rain.  i take a big chunk of cardboard for the door.  cozy.  mike w

If you can, take a picture of the tent set up so we can see the problem and maybe help you out.   A couple seconds of measuring and cutting would work A LOT better than having to use a piece of cardboard.

Not sure why you insist on continuing to "patch" the problem.  :dunno:  I'd think that if you corrected the problem, you'd be much happier, and then you could use the fly you were given as a fly.

Never have used a floor, every cot has a 5x7 piece of plastic under them with a 4x2 piece of carpet in front of them, this way the plastic is a vapor barrier and the carpet is nice to put your feet on before and after bedtime, no need for any more than that.

While you have your tent set up. Hose it down and drench it.  Let it dry.  It will help it tighten up.  It needs to be done!!!! Then when its all done and dry.  Use as much Thompsons water seal on it as you can. Use a sprayer and spray it on. Not kidding. Works awsome.  Let it dry and your good to go for a very long time.  Just a heads up.

Thanks for the tip, but we have always used Canvak when our tents need to be treated, this tent is already Sunforger treated, so it better not need me to do it for awhile, and I have a fly for it that I will use most of the time.

Make sure you soak it pretty good with water before you use it.  The seams will leak where the needle and thread went through the canvas.  Once you soak it good and it dries out, they will seal up.  I learned the hard way at hunting camp the first year.  Never had a problem since.   :twocents:

Love my Davis tent.
