first time calling at night
« on: January 11, 2012, 10:20:02 PM »
Well i had an amazing 30 minutes of calling coyotes out behind my house tonight. And behind my house i mean the back yard which looks out onto a 20 acre pasture owned by my landlord.

Anyway for the last few weeks we've been hearing coyotes going crazy all around the house. But mostly in heavily tree'd areas so night calling was out if the question as I dont have much in the wat of lights and such.

Well tonight the coyotes were so close to the house you could hear them growling between yipping and howling. So I decided to the calls and see if I could sctually call one in. Being a brihht night I could see the entire pasture fairly good...not good enough to shoot past 30yds. But enough to see any animals running around.

I started calling and instantly a coyote pops out and runs within 50yds then bolts back into the brush. 3 minutes later I sworn I could see mole hills moving  :dunno: after about 5 minutes I realized there was 3 or 4 coyotes standing no more then 20yds from me staring me down. Then they unleased their howling. Scared the crap out of me  :yike:
They ran back and forth between my fence and the brush on the far side of the pasture for about 30yds minutes
I got 2 shots off but never hit either one. And they still stayed in the pasture after I shot. It was the most fun I've had calling. And I can still hear the coyotes as I type this. Probably gonna go back out in a couple hours if they keep me up again tonight like they do every night

For years I would go out on bright moon light nights in the winter and call, looks like you can see real good but lots of times the coyote would bust me and all I would see was him leaveing. Two times a cougar come in that I knew of, now that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.  Great fun, it's beautifull out there.

I was gonna bring my 20g but I've been having 3 out if 5 shots misfire. Do I opted for a 22lr not really expecting to even see a coyote let alone get a shot.

I know better now.

First cougar you call in will kind of freak you out.   That is if you have any instinct for survival.
