Yukon Moose Hunt, anyone do one?

Well, the funding has reappeared for an archery Yukon moose hunt.  Was looking at one outfitter that my dad has used before but was seeing a fair number of negative reviews.

Does anyone have any experience with outfitters up there or know someone that had a great trip?  Thanks.

Jim Shockey has a nice camp up there. Run ya about $15,000 plus.

Shockey's about $25000 with all the add-ons.     A little too rich for my dad's blood.   

Have heard good things about Mervyn's as well.  Seems like most I/my dad have contacted are booked already for this year.

Are you talking the Yukon or hunting Alaska for the Alaskan/Yukon moose? Spendy to hunt the Yukon, or NWT with the prices then the goverments taxes(GST).

Hunt the Yukon, seems AK is even more pricey.  My dad wants to do a "once in a lifetime" hunt with me before he can't get around so well.  He is turning 72 this year.

I hunted with Blackstone Outfitters in 05 and again in 07. The first hunt was a sheep hunt with a moose tag in my pocket and second hunt was a moose rut hunt with a sheep,  caribou, bear tag in pocket. Both hunts were great adventures with me killing a nice fannin ram in 05 and a dall sheep and 56 inch moose on the second. I could have killed a bou but passed. The opion of having cheap tag in your pocket is a nice advantage for a Yukon hunt but it does get expensive with fees and shipping after you pull the trigger.
 I'm a sheep hunter first and chose to hunt rams first on my 07 hunt. It was very late in the year for sheep and it took us 8 days to find a ram worth killing. It was a great time but I paid for a moose hunt meaning my sheep cost me a trophy fee and I only had 2 days left to hunt moose. I was not going to be picky. That next afternoon we glimsed a bull about 1 mile away. The next time we were able to see him he was 40 yards away and I was shooting. He was a mature bull and had 3 cows with him and I was just happy to have found an average bull. Out of the 7 hunters in camp mine was right in the middle. I think the biggest ran 63-64.
 The nice thing with Blackstone is Jim does his own flying so getting stuck in a slow area isn't an issue. I was flown to 3 locations on both hunts and killed the moose by riding horses out of main camp.
 You stated on trying to find a hunt for this year. I think any well known outfitter will be booked up at least 1 if not 2 years out. I put a deposit on my 07 hunt when there in 05 cuz they only had 2 spots left at that time! There is always cancelation lists.

Sorry, my bad. 2008 was my second hunt. I'm on the top row second in. I have to say that pic doesn't do him justice. He was 11-13 and scored just shy of 200b&c.

I would have to look at my records to see the exact dates but it snowed at least half the days I was there.
 We called to this bull after getting in close but he had 3 cows with him and wasnt going to leave them for nothing. As you seen at Blackstones web site they kill some great bulls. On day 2 I passed on two bulls that were better than mine but I've learned not to burn days on other animals until your main tag is filled.

I am looking forward to this hunt.  My dad is planning on carrying a rifle but not hunting.  He will also attempt to film any activity I might have.  Plus, when that 74 incher (yeah right) won't come in closer than 200 yards, I can still whack him.

Are those Western Canada moose or Shiras?  Good luck on your hunt and thanks for the info.

Well take a good look at all the fees as they add up i.e. GST taxes, if they charge extra for flight in flight out of camp, getting meat and antlers out of camp and getting it home, tags. Are both you and your dad hunting or just you are hunting and he will follow and film?

Rams, he will be going along to observe and hopefully film me.  He will be carrying a rifle as well but will be acting as my gun bearer if I need it.

I would recommend Deuling Stone Outfitters as well. We have worked with Jarrett on a couple of occasions with the wild sheep chapter. He is a stand up guy and takes some tremendous moose as well.  I just looked at his price sheet and its $5k for a non-hunting companion.

I am headed to the Yukon in September 2013 for sheep/moose with Reynolds Outfitting.  Dan has some amazing sheep and moose up there but I don't think he takes non-hunting companions (which is why I asked earlier).
