Long range targets

I've got the room and have been wanting to setup some long range targets. Was hoping to get some feedback on specs (assuming steel but how think does it need to be?) and where I might snoop around to see where I could find something cheap(er).

I've built some steel ones before. Made the target part itself out of AR-400 plate. Good ring to it when ya hit it.

I agree with the ar. The only thing I do different is hang my chains at about 20* out of plumb to stop the sway when I whack it. White shows up the best....outside of the snow...of course.

The way I mount the chains on the back of the target, the target is actually "leaning" forward a bit so it deflects any bullet fragments downward. I am usually at least 30 seconds between long range shots so there is plenty of time for the target to stop swaying. I never have an issue in the wind.

So where would I go for the cheapest material?

if you have a used tractor shop around, dozer pads work great. any large welding shop may have rems too. buying ar from a supplier can hurt.

Check out the Evil Roy target by Action Targets. They make great products and you'll save yourself the hassle.

I use a old cut in half oxygen bottle. good ring when you hit it. I dont think you need AR plate, your shooting at this so if you use black steel its much cheaper and readily available almost anywhere

A 300rum will walk right through 5/8" mild steel at 600yds....god knows I welded that one up enough. Ar is much tougher. Worth the cost if you shoot high power rifles.
