Ugly Stick Replacment?
« on: January 15, 2012, 08:50:25 AM »
Well i used some flouro on my ugly stick lite and it destoyed my last eyelet! I was bank fishing for steelhead and did alot of casting/retrieving, Now i have grooves in it from the bottom 6 oclock to the 9 oclock position. and am wondering if Ugly Stick would replace that? I know its not the most expensive pole but it didnt take but one real trip befor it was not really useable anymore. I know if i put new line on it i will make a few casts get a hog of a fish on and SNAP!!  Any one ever had that problem with flouro and their eyelets??????

Just re-wrap the rod with new guides. Very easy weekend project and you can upgrade the guides at the same time. Fun too...

If you don't want to do it yourself you can take it to a local sporting goods store. I take mine to Hook, Line and sinker in Smokey Point. I just had the end eye replaced on my G-Loomis yesterday for $2.17.

IMO, there is no replacement for an Ugly Stik except another Ugly Stik

I have an Ugly Stick bottom fishing rod that I had to replace the guides for the same reason.  I changed them out to ceramic and haven't had an issue since.

It's not the line - my guess is there were issues before, but you can re-wrap. If you were having freeze issues, debris or swivel contact it will cause it. Any kind of contact other than line can cause issues, unless braid is in play.

we were steelhead fishing in FEBUARY  so yes it was freezing, plenty of seaweed and ya the swivel could have been jammed up with debris, but no braid was ever used on that pole.  thanks for the help i will go try to get it wrapped with a new eyelet

Auburn Sports and Marine will except exchange for same rod, not sure if Sportco will..  I like Ugly Sticks, have a few and they have lasted three times longer than my Lamiglas rods did...    Great boat Sturgeon (Tiger Light) rods and Salmon down rigger rods for their price.

I really like the new Jigging Tiger rod - if it gets rested on the alum rails, not worring about it snapping on the next fish..  Light and durable for sure.  1/4 the cost of a Higher end Jigging rod- that snap like a tooth pick if nicked..  I put some high quailty Avet reels on them and they will be bullet proof this summer in Robodad's back yard bottom fishing grounds...

Any line will groove your guides so long as their is sediment present in the water you fish.  The line collects the water with the sediment in it, then as you retrieve it acts like a wet sander, sanding your guide down.  A high quality rod generally has alconite or ceramic guide rings and this is pretty much eliminated when using any line, even braid which absorbs the water and sediment.

A local tackle shop or custom rod builder can replace it quick and easy.

ya i got mine pretty cheap and it has been pretty good except the guides/eyelets. I did get to try another rod on the river one day a could really tell the diffrence between the bottom and just a nibble better with the lami! Made me want to fork over the cash for one. The gye next to me was out fishing me by a mile with the same rig on, and i asked why he replied its the equiptment. he let me use the pole and it explained itself. !!

You don't need to wait until the end of the season.  Just get a new tip top and a stick of tip/ferrule cement.  If the epoxy from the tip wrap is over on to the tip just shave it off with a razor.  Then heat the bad top with a lighter and pull it off.  Heat the cement stick wipe some on the tip and apply the new tip.  You can re-wrap the tip after the season, but that is more work.  Greg's Custom Rods in Lake Stevens will have what you need.  You will need to Know the tip size so I would bring it with you.

 :yeah:

There is no need to send the rod in or exchange it.  It is a very easy DIY project and you will have a better rod when you are done
