Range Report Win. 94 30-30

Went to the range today to try out the new williams 5d sight on my Win 94. My dislikes are the lack of precision adjustment on the sight. You have to loosen the left/right screws and then move the aperture left or right by hand. This is even more annoying when you move the sight the wrong way. The up/down adjustment is slightly easier. If you want to move the sight up you loosen the set screw and adjust a screw head on top. To lower it you have to move the adjustment screw up and then push the aperture down. I would recommend starting with the sight gun shooting a little high in order to fine tune the adjustment easier. It is possible to use a caliper to make adjustments if you brought it with you. This would allow more fine tuning but the lines for reference don't necessarily mean anything so it's educated guesswork aka SWAG.

I also learned I am a little recoil sensitive apparently. After 30 rounds my shoulder was starting to get sore. After 50 it was painful to pull the trigger. I decided to try offhand shooting so I could use my entire body to deal with the recoil. This also allowed the buttplate to sit on a slightly different part of my shoulder. Not only was this much more enjoyable to shoot it aids in practice. It's also kind of nice to catch the brass when you cycle the lever instead of letting it fall and hit you on the nose or head, or fall into the back of your shirt. All in all, a blast at the range.

You might look into getting a slip on recoil pad for it. They work great and really help on long days on the range. I use one on almost all my guns from 22 to my mags. Why well not so much for recoil but for added length of pull on my guns

After I see my shoulder tomorrow I will decide on a recoil pad or not. It's not a pre-64 so I'm not all that determined to keep it looking original. If the bruise is nasty or the extra fluid in the area isn't gone by morning it's a recoil pad installed by this time tomorrow for sure.

Yeah the slip on ones are nice. The new simms fits great and ther is 3 sizes to pick from so you can make sure it fits nice and snug Then if you want it on another gun just pull it off and put it on another gun it fits. I think I have like 5 of them now. People laugh when they see them on my 223 and 22 and such, but the stocks are just way to short and I have to choke way up on the gun. So they help me alot by adding the lop to my guns. On the mags when you sit down and shoot 30+ rds you will really be sore the next day. The recoil pad helps spread it out and really makes it nice.

Yeah the slip on pads are good for mod 94s (for me).  I've needed something to extend the length of nearly every gun.  The mod 94s being the worst offender--being a short rifle and having more recoil back than up.  Always amazed at how much stock design can affect recoil.

I actually don't mind the shorter LOP's. That could be due to the fact that the first guns I ever fired were a ruger 10/22 and an M-16. I love the quick shortness to fire this gun. I'm not afraid to say I get hurt shooting it. My reason for the pad will be purely because I'm a wuss

I just traded for a 94 30/30 and holy crap is that a cool gun. Id really like to put a peep on it without drilling and tapping. So...... Since I havent googled your sight is it a peep? And Is your 94 a top or angle eject?

Oh, by the way. 30/30s dont recoil.

It is a peep and it it mounted on the top. I have a top eject which is why I could catch the brass or have it hit me in the head/nose. It uses the two holes on the left side of the receiver towards the back. I have a side mounted scope mount that is yours with hardware if you want it.

Thats what I wanted to hear. Thanks man. Im glad you posted this. Which sight did you get. Ive wanted to order one but the one I was going to get said I may need to drill and tap and another said it wouldnt work on a carbine. Let me know.

You are lucky I just read this and the package was still in the top of the trash! It's 5d-94-36. Williams 5d.

The Lyman 57, or the Williams FP are the two receiver sights I favor, click adjustments, easily repeatable, worth every cent more that you will pay. Installation involves removing the two plug screws in the side of the receiver and mounting them, If your rifle is zero'd adjust the peep so that you are looking through the open sight at the front sight and you're good to go.
