Took advantage of the snow!
« on: January 17, 2012, 02:27:01 PM »
Well, my boy (8yr) is reading Where the Red Fern Grows in school, so I figured we would take advantage of the two hour late start to school today and the fresh snow and go looking for racoon tracks.  He got to see tracks from three otters, rabbits, deer, and yes, finally some racoons.  A neighbor has had some problems with them trying to get into her geese at night so we were hoping we could help her out.  We followed the tracks into some heavy brush, split to cover each side and try to find if they cam out or were hiding in the thick stuff.  It turned out they came out at the far end, so we continued to follow.  As we trackede through the woods, I started to show him where they walked up onto a log and he says "Dad, there's a hole in that tree," so I look up and sure enough, there's a hole with two faces looking down at us.

I did not want to shoot them in the hole as climbing the tree would have been a pain....  Luckily, one panicked with us standing there and headed up the tree, boom down it comes.  It took a few sticks and snowballs before the second one panicked and headed up the tree, boom... thump.  About five minutes and fifteen snowballs later, it was too much for the third one, yep he was hiding in there as well, and he went climbing up the tree.  Boom, thump number three!

Not real big but three less bunny and turkey eating bandits.  And, a great time out with my boy!

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I was thinking a good thick racoon stew at the catfishing trip might do the trick.     It was not appreciated when I did racoon chile for a chile competition but you guys and gals might feel differently.

I think I did them a favor with all this snow and cold.  Drove a bunch today and didn't see any more tracks.

Very cool, sounds like you and the boy had a great time!
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

I'm saving the tails for sure but don't know if we'll get the hides tanned since they are pretty small.  Thanks All.

Went out again this afternoon.  Cut a track on the neighbor's place.  Followed it for almost two hours in a big circle.  It even backtracked across our tracks.  Finally it cut across anoth neighbor's place where we couldn't follow.  It was a big coon with hind feet that were at least three and a half inches long, wish we could have caught up to it.   >:(
