Predator Hunting Snow?
« on: January 18, 2012, 09:36:35 AM »
Managed to get the day off work and want to head and do some calling.  I have a foxpro charged and ready.  Live on the wetside and went out all day Monday with no call ins.  Saw 2 sets of cougar tracks and some yotes.  There is 18" at my house and Im sure much more where I'll be hunting.  Does all this snow make the predators hunker down or is this prime time?  I would think they would be hungry and come to any call?

I dont know man, I set up 6 times in the last 2 days with no action. I think tomorrow morning will be better. My property and my neighbors( 400 acres) did not even cut a track this evening. I know they are here cause some nights I hear a pack of about 12 going off, probably eating  all my deer bait (does). thats why I'm on a mission this year to bring the predator population down!

I did a mid day hunt yesterday due to the weather and it paid off.

theres so many factors that go into hunting dogs.  i have always had better luck after a snow.  whether it actually gets them up and moving or the fact that you can SEE them easier,i'm not sure.  the dogs here act a lot different than the ones back home.  we have had the best luck with a fawn distress/coyote attacking a fawn on the foxpro.

I've had my best luck one day in a total storm, blowing snow, grey, frozen ground.  Called in 14 that day, missed the 7 shots I took, came home empty handed.  But typically I hardly ever get them to show up when it's like that.  I think these were close enough to hear the call due to the noise of the wind, and were quite hungry due to the snow keeping their prey down.  But usually do quite well after it gets calm after a storm.

Welll it snowed yesterday and its freezing rain today. I'm gonna give it a try. I have a better chance up on the hills killing a dog than I sitting on my butt at home.
