The 7 Mag is a damn fine round.  For your first magnum that's a great choice.  All you have to do now is make sure it's a Tikka or a Sako ;)
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

The choice also depends on if you handload.  When you compare heavy for caliber bullets, the 7mag really offers very little improvement over the 30-06 if you are talking about 175gr bullets in the 7mag and 180gr in the 30-06, maybe 75 to 100fps faster with the 7mag.  However, in factory rounds the 300win mag will run 200-225fps faster than the 30-06 with both factory loaded 180gr bullets.  If you just want a new gun, and you shoot factory loads,  then if your really trying for an INCREASE in gun for elk and deer, it's truly a no brainer in my opinion.  Go with the 300 win mag. Truthfully, your best off just sticking with what you got and maybe do some upgrade on it, make it lighter, or a better stock and trigger or something like that.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

depends, how good of a shot are you? If your a bad shot, buy the biggest gun you can. If your a good shot, buy anything legal.

Im sure that statement was made tongue in cheek...but just in case it wasn't... there is nothing further from the truth...

The 7 is great, but I am not a magnum fan in general and have shot the 06' for 27 yrs now. However, its fun to have different guns. If you want a new deer and elk gun, the 7 would be great, as would the 300 WSM or 300 WM... I'd be inclined to go with the WSM... not even sure why though!!   :dunno:

Reinvent what you have.  Shoot it so much you know what it does with all of the different bullet weights and loads designed for quarry. Your '06 has them all.  Spend the money on optics, ammo and range time;

deer gun = .257 Roberts

Elk gun = .300 WSM or .338 WM.

That said.. none will do a good job if you can not shoot accurately.  PRACTICE!

There is no answer here since you didn't mention a single detail about yourself or the kind of hunting you do. Sounds like you don't need a new gun anyway.

This one would be fine for either elk or deer:
